Since 1982, GI Joe had been one of the top selling toy lines in the world, but all good things must eventually come to and end. Hasbro decided to end the GI Joe 3.75 inch line in 1994 after 13 glorious years. There were a few reasons for this, including a gradual drop in sales over the last several years, increased competition from other toy lines (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Power Rangers), but the biggest reason came from an old Joe enemy from the 70’s and 80’s……Star Wars. Hasbro and Kenner merged companies in 1994, which gave Hasbro control over the most prolific selling action figure line of all time, the Star Wars franchise. Hasbro immediately began making plans for a Star Wars revival line to be launched during the following year in 1995. At the time, Hasbro felt they didn’t need two competing boy action figure lines, so that spelled the end of the GI Joe toy line at the end of 1994.

Once again, Hasbro released several new figures, many of which were new molds and paint jobs. All of the Battle Corps figures were re-releases of previously issued figures except for one……….Ice Cream Soldier. I remember first seeing this and thinking that it was a great idea to keep morale up by distributing ice cream to all the Joe’s during those hard fought battles, but alas, this was not the purpose of Ice Cream Soldier. Turns out that he was just a simple Flamethrower. Anyway, we also got a last look at some fan-favorite characters, such as Stalker, Lifeline, Flint, Beachhead, Major Bludd and a new look Cobra Viper. The Star Brigade series continued and Ninja Force was now replaced by Shadow Ninjas. Hasbro also released a 30th anniversary commemorative collection of the original GI Joe figures released in 1964, marking the fist time these classic GI Joe figures were made into the 3.75 inch format.

The Battle Corps packaging for the 1994 line was virtually identical to the previous year with the more colorful cards and Battle Corps logo on the top right. The Shadow Ninja packaging had its own logo and color scheme as well. The Star Brigade packaging went through an overhaul by completely changing up the card and packaging and replacing it with a more traditional GI Joe color scheme and logo with the classic red, white and blue going down the left side of the card and the Star Brigade logo across the top.
