When George Lucas formally announced that he was going to re-unite the old gang and make another Indiana Jones movie in 2008, he stunned the entire world, but in a good way. After reviving his beloved Star Wars franchise with the Prequels, it was now time for some Indiana Jones love as well. After three varying level of attempts were made at an Indiana Jones toy line, along with Disney’s figures to promote their park attractions, Lucasfilm began shopping the Indy toy license around once again. It was quickly snatched up by toy giant Hasbro, who had previously merged with Kenner in 1993. Kenner made the first original Indiana Jones toys back in 1982, so Hasbro seemed like the logical choice. Hasbro then really blew everyone’s minds when they announced they would not only make figures based on the newest Indy movie, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but rather all previous Indiana Jones movies as well, to include Raiders of the Lost Ark, Temple of Doom and the Last Crusade. An entire generation of fans were now anxiously awaiting the latest figures and toys based on our favorite “finder of rare antiquities”.
The first wave that hit retail in 2008 was themed to Raiders of the Lost Ark, and included 8 total figures, along with deluxe figures and a vehicle. Hasbro played it safe by rolling out the “sure thing” first with characters that everyone already knew, such as Marion, German Soldier, Cairo Swordsman, Monkey Man, Sallah, Belloq and two new versions of Indy. The next wave released belonged to the newest Indy movie, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. This was the largest wave that Hasbro released for their Indiana Jones action figure line, and included 9 new figures, deluxe figures, multipacks, vehicles, and even a playset. It should be noted that Hasbro also began sprinkling in their 12 Inch figures to the line at this point as well. The 12 Inch figures were a mix from Raiders and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The third and fourth waves of figures were from The Last Crusade and Temple of Doom respectively, and included 6 new figures in each wave. These new figures from these waves were highly anticipated, as fans had never seen most of these characters in action figure form before. Hasbro’s Indiana Jones line came to an end around Christmas of 2008, but a final wave of 6 figures was released in 2011 as an exclusive to San Diego Comic-Con. This wave was originally supposed to be released in early 2009, but never came to be, due to the line being shut down.
The packaging for the Hasbro line of Indiana Jones figures was eye catching, with its classic Indiana Jones style. It featured the iconic Indiana Jones logo across the top of the blister pack card in big bold letters. A classic illustration of the famed archaeologist sat at the top right of the card, directly next to the logo. Hasbro chose an earthy looking brown/yellow themed color as the basic tone of the card with the majority of the card in brown and the area behind the figure in yellow. The colors definitely fit the theme of the package. The carded figures used a traditional blister pack bubble, but had a die-cut at the top left to give it that unique appearance. That same die-cut top also is a big reason why these figures are so tough to find in mint condition. The overall design of the package was in the shape of Indy’s famous whip, that wound around the package from the bottom to the top. The name of each character was placed on the bottom of the bubble with a brown sticker. Each package also featured a “Hidden Relic” sticker on the bubble for their newest gimmick. The relic’s came in “wooden crates” and contained various objects from the Indiana Jones’ movies. Hasbro did a fantastic job with the packaging on their Indiana Jones line, and it was incredibly refreshing to see Indy finally get the toy treatment that he sorely deserved for many years.
