The Saga Collection

The Saga Collection 2006 – 2007

The Saga Collection was Hasbro’s first Star Wars line without any new movies on the horizon, so it was a mix of characters from all Star Wars mediums. The Saga Collection continued the Star Wars brand, but many of the characters were re-packs or re-paints and the packaging had already been done with the Original Trilogy Collection. There were some great figures and multipack sets mixed into the Saga line, but the line struggled to find success.

For more information about Hasbro’s The Saga Collection, see bottom of the page for a complete summary.

Saga Collection (2006 – 2007): Basic Figures

The Saga Collection released 74 basic figures over a two year period with 10 of them being released on the Ultimate Galactic Hunt cards as well. Give Hasbro some credit for producing the first Major Bren Derlin (Cliff Clavin from Cheers) figure. It should be noted that the last 5 figures on this line were Walmart Exclusives.

This was Hasbro’s first Star Wars line without any new movies on the horizon, so they went back to the multi genre format to mix things up a bit. The Saga Collection included characters from all six movies at that time, with an emphasis on the prequel trilogy since it was still fresh on everyone’s mind. Hasbro created this line to simply keep Star Wars alive with their new younger demographic and still give the adult collectors something they hadn’t seen before. It kind of worked……sort of. A lot of the characters were simply re-packs and re-paints, with a few nice surprises sprinkled in here and there.

The packaging for the Saga Collection line would’ve been great……if it hadn’t just been done with the Original Trilogy Collection line a few years prior. The packaging re-used the silver striping across the top of the card with a small photo of the character in the bottom left side of the card. Once again, Hasbro used a background photo on the card to make the character fit right into the action, which was still really cool looking, even if it had been done before. One of the gimmicks for this line was the introduction of the Ultimate Galactic Hunt or UGH for you acronym lovers. The UGH basically used the same card and figure except the card was done in a gold foil instead of the standard issue. Each of the UGH packages contained a mail order form to send in for the big prize, which was a George Lucas in Stormtrooper action figure (Ok, now that is a pretty great prize).

The Saga Collection was a “nice” line but it seemed to struggle to find any kind of identity or separate itself from other previous lines. In fact, it borrowed heavily from past lines so it kind of seemed like the Saga Collection was just a mish mash of a bunch of themes thrown together. There were some great figures mixed into the Saga line and they had some great multipack sets (Lucas Family Set, Death Star Briefing Set) but in the end, it just didn’t catch fire. Overall, the Saga Collection is a good line to collect due to the figures being plentiful and the values being very reasonable. Some multipacks and vehicles can bring higher prices on the secondary market, but still a good collectible line.
