Disney Indiana Jones (2001-Present): Accessories

Disney has released countless numbers of Indiana Jones accessories over the years, to include trading pins, Funko Pop’s, statues, posters, books, and roleplaying accessories, but never any playsets or vehicles for their action figures.

On October 30, 2012, the Walt Disney company purchased Lucasfilm for $4 Billion. Not only did that deal include Star Wars, but also the Indiana Jones franchise. This means that Disney could now do what they wish with Indy’s world, but Disney’s relationship with the king of adventure didn’t just begin then. After three varying level of attempts were made at an Indiana Jones toy line, Disney began making merchandise based on the classic franchise once they opened Indiana Jones attractions at both of their U.S parks (and later included Euro Disney). The Epic Stunt Spectacular opened at MGM Studios in 1989, while the Temple of the Forbidden Eye ride opened at Disneyland in 1995. Since no toy line had the rights to create Indiana Jones merchandise at the time, Disney jumped all over it by releasing toys and accessories to market their attractions. The first Disney produced Indiana Jones action figures were released in 2001, and continue to this day.

Disney Indiana Jones merchandise was only available in Disney parks, so there was no need for massive or extensive toy lines. For their first Indiana Jones action figures, Disney released a solitary 4.5″ Indy figure, along with a 10″ vinyl figure as well in 2001. Two years later, a series of five different figures were released that featured characters used in the Stunt Spectacular show, including German Mechanic, Cairo Swordsman, German Soldier, Marion Ravenwood, and of course, Indiana Jones. That same year saw the release of two 12″ GI Joe themed figures featuring Indiana Jones. They were made to celebrate the Epic Stunt Spectacular Show and were produced by Hasbro Toys. Disney released one figure each in 2007 and 2011, that featured Indy from Raiders and Temple of Doom respectively, but in a new 7″ format. New Indy figures were also released beginning in 2008 featuring Mickey Mouse as the legendary explorer.

The packaging for the Disney line of Indiana Jones figures was eye catching, with its classic Indiana Jones style, but you would expect nothing less from the king of multi-media. It featured a classic illustration of the famed archaeologist at the top left of the card, with the iconic Indiana Jones logo across the top of in big bold orange and yellow letters. Disney chose a yellow/orange themed color as the basic tone of the card, which definitely fit the theme of the package. The carded figures used a traditional blister pack bubble, that took up most of the entire card. The name of each character was placed on the bottom of the bubble with a red sticker. Disney did a great job with the packaging on their Indiana Jones line, and it still continues to this day with various merchandising products.
