Once again, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles toy line was running in full stride for the 1993 series, as they remained among the top selling toy lines in the entire world. They still had one of the most successful animated shows on television, and the latest Turtles live action movie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III, was released this year as well. The hugely popular Archie Comics turtles comic book was still going strong, but the original turtles comic book from Mirage Studios came to an end in 1993. A second series from Mirage began late in the year, but it never really took hold, and eventually ended in 1995. The action figure line was still among the top selling toy lines in the world, and remained very much in high demand. Turtle non-toy merchandising was also still doing extremely well with no signs of turtle fatigue in sight.
We got a ton of new figures and product from Playmates Toys in 1993, but only 7 figures were released as part of their basic assortment. From the good guys, we got Halfcourt, Hot Spot, Mona Lisa, and Sandstorm. For the bad guys, we got Scratch, and new robotic versions of Rocksteady and Bebop. Like previous years, we also got a whole bunch of smaller sub-sets of figures, including the Auto Mutation, Farmer Turtles, Giant versions of the Movie Star, Ninja Action, Road Ready, Sewer Heroes, a new Toon figure series, Turtle Trolls, the Universal Monsters, a new series based on the new live action movie, along with their Giant versions, a 2nd wave of Cave Turtles, and finally a 2nd wave of Mutations figures as well. That is a ton of new action figures, and it was very clear that Playmates was all-in with new figures. Also released were just 5 new vehicles a few new accessories based on the new Turtles III movie. The focus of Playmates had definitely shifted from vehicles and playsets to figures, figures, figures and more figures.
For the first time in the TMNT line, the packaging for the basic assortment had changed. Gone was the in your face, character driven figure cards to make way for a new more cartoony and brighter looking card. Unlike past years, now each character had the same card, which was the four turtles on a sky blue background, with the figure centered in the middle and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles logo above the figure bubble. The Sewer Heroes series used the same packaging. As in past years, the packaging for each of the individual series of figures were different for each one. The highlights for the sub-sets in 1993 were definitely the Turtle Trolls and the Universal Monsters series.
