Playmates 1999

Star Trek 1999 (Playmates)

With a gradual decline in sales over the last few years and increased competition from newer brands, Playmates decided to end their Star Trek line in 1999. The final wave was comprised of mostly 12 inch and 9 inch figures. A final Warp Factor series and new boxed sets were released as well. Once again, every Star Trek medium to date was included with the final releases.

For more information about the 1999 waves of waves of Star Trek products, see bottom of page for a complete summary.

Over the course of its Star Trek run, Playmates had released a massive amount of new products for each year, but that production greatly slowed down for 1997 and 1998. For their final release of products in 1999, almost every item was an exclusive to a retail store or site. This made collecting the final products a bit more difficult, which also makes them more valuable. The decline in sales was due to a number of reasons, but one of the biggest was certainly the massive sales numbers of the Star Wars toy line. Since Hasbro brought the franchise back to life in 1995, it had boasted huge numbers each year at retail. Also, the last live action Star Trek movie, Insurrection, was such a disaster that Paramount shelved the entire Star Trek movie series. With no new movies on the horizon, Star Trek only had their television series’ and one of the biggest (Deep Space Nine) ended in June of 1999, leaving only Star Trek Voyager. Voyager would run until 2001, with modest ratings but Playmates decided that it just wasn’t enough to merit a continuation of the toy line (despite Seven of Nine). During its eight year run from 1992 to 1999, Playmates released some truly amazing and high quality products. Their figures were fun, and it was obvious they paid attention to detail. When you think of iconic toy lines from the 1990’s, most collectors name Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or the Power Rangers, but Playmates’ Star Trek line should definitely stand with their head held high because they finally showed what a good Star Trek line could be by realizing its potential and bringing it to life.

For its eight and final year of releasing Star Trek products, Playmates produced items across several various Star Trek mediums including the Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Star Trek Voyager. The amount of products released didn’t come close to matching previous years, but it was still another nice release year. Virtually all figures released in 1999 were retail or mail away exclusives making the final wave a tad more difficult to collect. The final wave of Warp Factor 9″ figures were Target and Kay-Bee Toys exclusives. Target also had the final wave of 4.5″ Warp Factor figures as well. Two more Transporter Series were released through Target. Playmates also released two new figures under the Alien Combat Series with Klingon Warrior and Borg Drone. These were not exclusives and were designed by Art Asylum. No new roleplay items or lights and sounds ships were issued in 1999. Even though 1999 was a line filled with exclusives, Playmates still managed to release some quality products that were definitely sought after.

Once again, Playmates released several different lines for various television series and movies, so the packaging for each line was completely different to match it for these final waves. The Warp Factor series figure packaging was virtually identical to the previous year, which was an attractive card that featured a slope on the left side and a colorful planet background illustration to the right. The 9 Inch Warp Factor boxes had the same design as the 4.5 Inch figures but without the actual slope of the card. The new 12″ Collector’s Edition line featured various colors in a very attractive window box with a flap. The new Transporter series figures were identical as the previous year, along with the new Wizard World exclusives. The new 9″ Alien Combat Series was another attractive box that fit the tone of the individual figure inside. Overall, Playmates really did a wonderful job with the packaging on almost every wave or line they released from 1992-1999 with lots of attention to detail. The packaging for the final wave was yet another example of that with beautiful colors, shapes and design.
