Indiana Jones – Star Toys

Indiana Jones
1987 (Star Toys)

Star Toys released their Indiana Jones line in 1987, but it only included ONE character, and that was Indy himself. There were literally several different versions of Indy, none of which had anything to do with the previous movies. There were seven known versions that feature the same figure, but with slightly different outfits and accessories. The figures were poorly constructed, with no vehicles or playsets made available. This line was only available overseas and never actually made it the U.S market.

Indiana Jones – Star Toys (1987): Accessories

No true accessories were produced for the Indiana Jones action figure line by Star Toys, but they did create a few roleplay accessories, such as a Backpack Set, a Survival Kit, and a set of Walkie Talkies.

Indiana Jones – Star Toys (1987): Playsets

Star Toys did not release any Playsets for their Indiana Jones action figure line in 1987.

Indiana Jones – Star Toys (1987): Vehicles

Star Toys did not release any vehicles for their Indiana Jones action figure line in 1987.

Despite the massive box office numbers of both previous Indiana Jones movies, that success did not necessarily translate over to the merchandising side of things. This was especially true in the toy aisles. Kenner’s action figure line was considered a moderate success, but certainly not the numbers that were expected. LJN’s attempt to revive the Indiana Jones action figure line was a complete disaster, and their licensing deal to the franchise was ended in 1985. So once again, the rights to make Indiana Jones toys was on the market. Since the movies had a more grown-up and adult theme to them, a new action figure line would be a tough sell. A small international toy company called Star Toys decided to accept that challenge. Star Toys was a smaller company that wasn’t really known for their action figure lines, but got the Indiana Jones toy license at an affordable price, so they felt it was worth the risk.

For their line of Indiana Jones action figures, Star Toys decided to make ONE character, and that was Indiana Jones himself. That being said, Star Toys did create several different versions of Indy, none of which had anything to do with the previous two Indiana Jones movies. The exact number of variations is unknown, but there are seven known versions. They all featured the same Indiana Jones character, but with slightly different outfits. Some had Indy wearing no shirt at all. Each package also contained different accessories, to include an alligator, watch, compass cloth bag, rats, snake, and of course the standard whip, gun and hat. The figures were designed as 6″ tall, and very poorly constructed. No vehicles or playsets were created for the line, but Star Toys did actually release a few roleplay accessory sets. Unfortunately (or fortunately), this line was only available overseas and never actually made it the U.S market.

The packaging for the Star Toys line of Indiana Jones figures was not very creative, but at least it looked better than the figures themselves, but not much better. It featured an older looking map of the globe across the entirety of the card back, with their Indiana Jones logo across the top of the card in big yellow letters. The logo was centered on a black pinstriped theme, that sat above the classic looking map. The words “Mapa Mundi 1939” was centered on the bottom of each card. Mapa Mundi is Latin and is usually associated with medieval European map of the world. Since literally every figure in the line was some variation of Indiana Jones, there wasn’t much need to label the character.
