By 1992, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were still in full stride and firing on all cylinders. They had one of the most successful animated shows on television, two hugely popular comic books lines from different studios, an ultra successful toy line, merchandising licenses for just about everything a logo could fit on, and had two very popular and high grossing movies from 1990 and 1991. However, New Line Cinemas decided to skip a big screen release in 1992 and spend more time writing another planed sequel for release the following year. Demand for turtle action figures and products was still crazy high and the animated series was still doing extremely well, so all was very good in the world of turtles.

We got a ton of new figures and releases from Playmates Toys in 1992 with many new characters being introduced. For the basic assortment good guys, we got Doctor El, Hothead, King Lionheart, Merdude, Monty Moose, Rock ‘N Roll Mondo Gecko and three new versions of April O’Neil. Joining Shredder’s group of misfits were Scale Tail and Anthrax. Like previous waves, we also got several more sub-sets, including the Bodacious Birthday Turtles, Cave Turtles, Movie Star line, Mutations Figures, Sewer Spitting Turtles, Smash Em Bash Em Figures, Turtles games, Wacky Wild West, a 2nd wave of Mutant Military Turtles, and a 3rd wave of Giant Turtles. Also released were 10 new vehicles but Playmates decided to not release any new accessories or playsets this year. Clearly the focus for this year was on the figures and the many different variations Playmates was putting out.

Like the previous years, the packaging for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle line was just like the characters themselves, attention grabbing and kind of all over the place. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle logo sat at the top of the card, just above the character’s name. The tagline, “Heroes in a Half Shell”, was eliminated from the card front. There were multiple pictures of each character in three of the packaging corners with the figure itself in a bright, easy to see bubble on the center/right side. Overall, the packaging card was very busy looking but it definitely works for these pizza eating and fun loving ninja turtles and friends.
