The year 1996 was another huge year for Playmates and Star Trek with a ton of new Star Trek products being released, including figures and accessories from every Star Trek medium to date. This included the brand new movie, First Contact. With two very successful television shows on the air, Star Trek Deep Space Nine and Star Trek Voyager, and a brand new movie in the theaters, Playmates had several options for new figures and accessories. A second wave of action figures based on the television series, Voyager were released in 1996, along with a line from the new movie, First Contact, but no other Star Trek medium would get their own dedicated lines. Instead, Playmates elected to combine different mediums together under a unified brand. This allowed Playmates to release a variety of items at the same time without being restricted to certain shows or movies. The mixed series line proved very successful the year before, so it returned in 1996. New 9 Inch lines were also released for First Contact and a third wave of 9 Inch Collector Series figures. Sales were strong for most Star Trek products released by Playmates and it seemed they could do no wrong with Star Trek. It was a great time to be a Star Trek fan or collector.
For its fifth year of releasing Star Trek products, Playmates produced items across several various Star Trek mediums including the Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Star Trek Voyager and the new movie, First Contact. The amount of products released didn’t match the year before, but it was still another big release year. The Voyager line saw only six new figures released. The second wave of Mixed Series products consisted of 18 brand new figures. The new First Contact line saw eleven new figures, along with five 9″ figures, three lights and sounds ships and a new roleplay phaser. A new Starfleet Academy line was released with four new figures and a new wave of 9 Inch Collector Series figures hit the shelves as well. The original series saw a few new roleplay accessories and 30th Anniversary pieces. Last but not least, were multiple exclusive figures that were released through Spencer Gifts, Target and Kay-Bee Toys. That was a ton of new Star Trek product hitting the market in one year with no signs of stopping.
Since Playmates released several different lines for various television series and movies, the packaging for each line was completely different to match each one. The Voyager figures series was similar to the previous year, with the Star Trek Voyager logo across the top of the card, above an illustration of the Enterprise flying forward. The Mixed Series cards were also similar to the previous year, featuring the iconic Star Trek logo in forward motion. The First Contact figure packaging was a colorful card with a Borg illustration on the top left of each card with the movie logo on the right. The 9 Inch boxes had the same design as the 6 Inch figures. The classic movie line had the original series logo with the traditional vintage look to it, along with the original Enterprise across the top. Overall, each line of figures linked perfectly to its corresponding series very well , and was another example of beautifully done packaging for Playmate’s various Star Trek lines.
