The Power of the Force

The Power of the Force 1985

With no more Star Wars movies on the horizon, Kenner created the Power of the Force line in 1985. The series introduced 15 new figures, and 22 re-packed previously released figures with new Power of the Force packaging. Each figure included a coin, which proved very popular. The new figures are commonly knows as the “Final 17”, which include the new 15 figures, along with Paploo and Lumat who were previously released at the end of the Return of the Jedi line. Also released were two large vehicles and three smaller “Mini-Rig” type vehicles.

For more information about Kenner’s of Power of the Force line, see the bottom of the page for a complete summary.

The Power of the Force (1985): Basic Figures

Kenner gave us 15 brand new carded figures for the Power of the Force line, despite the fact that this series is commonly refereed to as the “Final 17”. Paploo and Lumat are usually lumped in with these new ones even though they were previously released in the Return of the Jedi line.

Amanaman
Accessories: Staff, Coin
Year Released: 1985

Loose $40 – $65

Anakin Skywalker
Accessories: Coin
Year Released: 1985

Loose $125 – $175

A-Wing Pilot
Accessories: Blaster, Coin

Barada
Accessories: Staff, Coin

Loose $100 – $150

Imperial Dignitary

Imperial Gunner
Accessories: Blaster, Coin
Year Released: 1985

Loose $175 – $225

Lando Calrissian (General Pilot)
Accessories: Blaster Pistol, Cloak, Coin

Carded $750 – $1000
Loose $300 – $400

Luke Skywalker
(Stormtrooper Disguise)
Accessories: Blaster Rifle, Helmet, Coin

Loose $125 – $175

Warok
Accessories: Bow, Quiver, Hood, Coin

Carded $2,500 – $4,000
Loose $650 – $800

Yak Face
Accessories: Staff, Coin
Year Released: 1985
Scarcity Factor: This items is rare, and considered a “Holy Grail” figure for most collectors
Notes: You got to love the creativity in naming these guys. Yak Face is among the hardest to find Star Wars items of the entire action figure line, due to only bring released overseas and never domestically, hence the foreign packaging.

In addition to the new figures listed above, Kenner also released 22 previously released figures with the new Power of the Force packaging and coins.

AT-AT Driver

AT-AT Driver
Accessories: Blaster Rifle, Coin

Loose $35 – $55

AT-ST Driver
Accessories: Blaster, Coin

Ben (Obi-Wan) Kenobi

Gamorrean Guard
Accessories: Axe, Coin

Carded $350 – $450
Loose $45 – $65

Jawa
Accessories: Cloth Cloak, Blaster Pistol, Coin
Year Released: 1985

Carded $900 – $1,100
Loose $80 – $110

Luke Skywalker
(Jedi Knight)
Accessories: Lightsaber, Blaster, Cloak, Coin

Loose $35 – $55

Luke Skywalker
(X-Wing Pilot)

Loose $45 – $65

Stormtrooper
Accessories: Blaster Rifle, Coin
Year Released: 1985

The Power of the Force line included three brand new Mini-Rig type vehicles and two more amazing looking vehicles with the Tatooine Skiff and Ewok Battle Wagon.

Carded $700 – $900
Loose $225 – $300

Security Scout
Accessories: None
Year Released: 1985
Scarcity Factor: Tough to find on secondary market
Notes: The Security Scout was a Power of the Force version of Kenner’s popular Mini-Rigs lines, but with a completely new concept vehicle. This was a camouflaged vehicle that acted as sort of a jet pack for figures.

Ewok Battle Wagon

Market Value:
Boxed $750 – $1,000
Loose $200 – $300

Ewok Battle Wagon
Accessories: Wagon, Battle Ram, Cage, Skull, Ladders
Year Released: 1985
Scarcity Factor: Tough to find on secondary market
Notes: The Ewok Battle Wagon was a concept vehicle and was never actually seen in Return of the Jedi. It is a very cool looking vehicle and offered kids a ton of play options, but unfortunately never really caught on with buyers at the time. It is tough to find on the secondary market and can command a big price tag.

Tatooine Skiff

Market Value:
Boxed $1,500 – $2,000
Loose $750 – $1,000

Tatooine Skiff
Accessories: Skiff, Blaster Gun, Rudder Lever, Landing Pods, Plank, Railing
Year Released: 1985
Scarcity Factor: Tough to find on secondary market
Notes: The Tatooine Skiff remains one of the most, if not the most, coveted and sought after Star Wars vehicle ever produced. The Skiff itself is amazingly cool and full of character. It’s a fantastic likeness of the actual Tatooine Skiffs from Return of the Jedi and by far, the best thing to come from an already great Power of the Force toy line. This vehicle fetches a pretty big penny on the secondary market, but can definitely be found if you’re looking for one.

With the last Star Wars movie being released in 1983 and no new movies on the horizon, Kenner had to come up with a different way to market their Star Wars action figures, so The Power of the Force line was created in 1985. The POTF line would introduce 15 brand new figures, as well as re-pack many of the older ones with the new Power of the Force packaging. The big gimmick for this line was the inclusion of a coin in each package, depicting the carded character. These coins would prove very popular and are highly coveted in the modern market. A planetary map was also included with each vehicle as well. The map featured the various known planets of the Star Wars universe at the time. This was a very cool piece of the Star Wars world for fans and collectors.

Kenner gave us 15 brand new figures and 22 previously released figures with the power of the Force packaging. The new figures are commonly knows as the “Final 17”, which includes the new 15 figures, along with Paploo and Lumat who were previously released towards the end of the Return of the Jedi line. There were quite a few highlights from this line but the stars of this show have to be Yak Face and the Tatooine Skiff vehicle, but for different reasons. Yak Face was a cool looking new figure but was never released in the United States, and the Tatooine Skiff just had the misfortune of being an amazing looking vehicle that happened to be part of a very low selling toy line that never really found its niche at the time. That makes these two items among the more rare and expensive from this line.

The Power of the Force line is a challenging one to collect, due to their scarceness and rarity. Since there were no more Star Wars movies to promote it, the Power of the Force line just didn’t sell that well. Kenner honestly gave it a good try, but kids just weren’t dragging their parents to the stores anymore to buy Star Wars figures like they had in the past. Because of that, stores didn’t order as many of these figures so Kenner simply produced less of them, which is why they are tough to track down, especially in good condition. Some of these figures can be found on the secondary markets for reasonable prices, but most others can fetch high prices and definitely make many Star Wars collectors wish lists, including mine.
