Over the course of its Star Trek run, Playmates had released a massive amount of new products for their action figure line, but things began to change a bit the year before in 1997, and that trend continued for 1998. It was still another good year for Playmates and Star Trek with a lot of new products being released, but sales were definitely beginning to slow down and a certain other Science Fiction franchise, called Star Wars, was back in the game and posting huge sales numbers at retail. A new live action Star Trek movie called Insurrection was released in 1998 that featured the Next Generation cast, but it floundered at the box office and was generally considered a disappointment to fans. Still, Playmates released quite a few products based on this movie due to the success of First Contact. Most of the product ended up sitting on the shelves. Once again, Playmates released several other new products from the various Star Trek television mediums, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Star Trek Voyager and the Original Series in mixed assortments lines. This mixed assortment allowed Playmates to release a variety of items at the same time without being restricted to certain shows or movies. The Warp Factor line was an example of this. Playmates also released another 9″ Warp Factor line and a brand new Transporter Series. Several exclusive figures of different sizes were also released in 1998 to try and boost interest.
For its seventh year of releasing Star Trek products, Playmates produced items across several various Star Trek mediums including the Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Star Trek Voyager and the new movie, Insurrection. The amount of products released didn’t come close to matching previous years, but it was still another nice release year. The second wave of Warp Factor was introduced in 1998 with 9 new figures, along with a new Action Warp Factor Series that featured 10 figures with different action moves. A new line called the Transporter Series was introduced that featured 10 new figures in various transporting mode looks. Playmates had to represent the new live action movie, Insurrection, so a 9″ line was released with 8 figures, as well as a 12″ Collector’s Edition line of 4 figures. Two new accessories were released for Insurrection with a new roleplay phaser and a lights and sounds Enterprise. Last but not least, were multiple exclusive figures that were released through Target, Kay-Bee Toys and Wizard World. Even though 1998 was a “down” year, that was still a log of new Star Trek product hitting the market in one year.
Since Playmates released several different lines each television series and movie, the packaging for each line was completely different to match it. The Warp Factor series figure packaging was virtually identical to the previous year, which was an attractive card that featured a slope on the left side and a colorful planet background illustration to the right. The 9 Inch Warp Factor boxes had the same design as the 4.5 Inch figures but without the actual slope of the card. The new movie, Insurrection featured a new 9″ line, as well as a 12″ Collector’s Edition line. Both lines featured similar packaging with a red colored theme with the classic movie logo at the bottom center of the boxes. The new Transporter series featured each figure on a Transporter Pad cardboard setting with a Warp Factor looking package. Overall, each line of figures linked perfectly to its corresponding series very well , and was another example of beautifully done packaging for Playmate’s various Star Trek lines.
