Over the course of its Star Trek run, Playmates had released a massive amount of new products for their action figure line, but things were beginning to change a bit in 1997. It was still another good year for Playmates and Star Trek, with a lot of new products being released, but sales were beginning to slow down and a certain other Science Fiction franchise, called Star Wars, was back in the game and posting big sales numbers at retail. With no new movies released in 1997, all new released products were from the various Star Trek television mediums, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Star Trek Voyager and the Original Series. For the first time since Playmates began releasing Star Trek products, no dedicated action figure waves were released for individual shows or movies. Instead, all lines of figures were assortment series that included characters from all different Star Trek mediums. This allowed Playmates to release a variety of items at the same time without being restricted to certain shows or movies. The mixed series line had been proving very successful over the last two years, so it returned in 1997. A brand new 4.5″ line called Warp Factor was also introduced this year, along with a 9″ line to match. A fourth round of 9 Inch Collector Series figures was also released, along with various exclusive figures of different sizes.
For its sixth year of releasing Star Trek products, Playmates produced items across several various Star Trek mediums including the Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Star Trek Voyager. The amount of products released didn’t match previous years, but it was still another big release year. The third and final wave of Mixed Series products consisted of 11 new figures. Another new 4.5″ figure line called Warp Factor was introduced in 1997 with 16 figures, four roleplay accessories and two new lights and sounds ships. The Warp Factor series would also get six new 9″ figures as well. A new wave of 9 Inch Collector Series figures hit the shelves as well, with 8 new figures. This would be the last wave of the 9 Inch Collector Series. Last but not least, were multiple exclusive figures that were released through Spencer Gifts and Kay-Bee Toys. Even though 1997 was a “down” year, that was still a log of new Star Trek product hitting the market in one year.
Since Playmates released several different lines each television series and movie, the packaging for each line was completely different to match it. The Mixed Series cards were similar to the previous year, featuring the iconic Star Trek logo in forward motion. The new Warp Factor series figure packaging was an attractive card that featured a slope on the left side and a colorful planet background illustration to the right. The classic Star Trek logo sat at the top center of the card. The 9 Inch Warp Factor boxes had the same design as the 4.5 Inch figures but without the actual slope of the card. The regular 9 Inch Collector Series line returned and was identical to the previous years with the blue background and classic look to it. Overall, each line of figures linked perfectly to its corresponding series very well , and was another example of beautifully done packaging for Playmate’s various Star Trek lines.
