By 1976, Mego toys had gained quite the reputation as one of the top action figure producers in the world. With such iconic and ultra successful lines such as the World’s Greatest Super Heroes, Star Trek and Planet of the Apes, Mego was truly making all the right moves. Even with their success with their big signature lines, Mego was always looking for more to add diversity to their brand. Since Mego now had some real clout in the toy industry and were boasting massive toy sale numbers, they now had some extra capital to go out and grab bigger licenses, and they did exactly that with CHIP’S, one of the most popular shows on television at the time. The show, about the adventures of two California Highway Patrol officers, began in 1977 and ran until 1983. The CHIP’S line of figures proved to be a big seller for Mego until it was discontinued in 1981.
The CHIP’S Series toy line actually featured two different action figure lines with a classic 8 Inch series, along with a new 3.75 Inch series as well. The 8 Inch series featured only three basic characters, with the iconic Ponch and Jon figures, along with their supervisor, just called Sarge. A motorcycle was also produced for the 8 Inch figures. For the 3.75 Inch line, Mego produced three new characters (Ponch, Jon and Sarge), along with two re-purposed figures from the CB McHaul line, Wheels Willy and Jimmy Squeaks. A motorcycle and Police chase car were also released for the 3.75 Inch line as well. Mego’s head sculpts for the 8 inch figures are actually quite nice with a lot of attention to likeness details but the 3.75 Inch line suffered the typical paint jobs that other Mego lines endured at the time with a lot of paint fading.
The packaging for the CHIP’S line of action figures definitely fit the theme of the line with a bright blue color design. It was the basic blister pack carded Mego design with the figure inside of a bubble on the right side of the package and a couple of portraits of Ponch and Jon on the left. The classic CHIP’S logo sat at the top of the actual card flap. The name of the each character sits directly above the blister pack bubble in bold yellow letters. The CHIP’S action figure packaging was fairly simple and was definitely catered towards the two main characters, but still remained attractive.
