This was the first time that figures from multiple series were included together in any format.
The year 1994, was a great year for the Star Trek franchise, and an even better year for Star Trek fans. In addition to the already produced Next Generation action figure line, the Playmates toy company also released lines based on the brand new television series, Deep Space Nine and the new movie, Star Trek Generations. Both, Next Generation and Deep Space Nine, were having massive success with big television ratings, so the toy lines were also selling very well. The Generations movie was a different story though. It was considered a moderate success at the box office, mostly due to its studio friendly budget, but fan reaction was mixed with many fans feeling let down with the movie. The toy line also saw mixed results with many of the figures warming peg hooks for many months. Sales were still strong for the Next Generation line, as well as the new Deep Space Nine series. The Star Trek world was ever expanding, so Star Trek toys were becoming hot again. Star Trek had been re-introduced to a new audience, who was seeing Star Trek for the first time on television with the new shows and they liked what they saw. This was truly a great time to be a Star Trek fan with all the new content and merchandise hitting the market.
For its third year of Star Trek products, Playmates spread the love across various Star Trek mediums including the The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Classic Series and the new Generations movie. It was the biggest years to date for Playmates and Star Trek. The Next Generation saw 26 new figures released, as well as a new light and sound ship in the Borg cube and a new variation of the Type I Phaser. The first wave of Deep Space Nine products consisted of nine brand new figures, along with a Runabout Orinoco vehicle for the figures and a lights and sounds Space Station. The Generations line saw a whopping 16 figures, along with three new lights and sounds ships, two roleplay accessories and an action figure playset with its Engineering set. The original series finally got some love from Playmates in 1994 with its classic accessories line and a brand new series of 9″ figures were released as the Command Edition. Included were 9″ versions of Kirk, Picard and Sisco. A set of 9″ figures were also created for the movie, Generations. A new limited edition box set was also released with the Starfleet Officers Collectors Set. That was a lot of Star Trek product hitting the market in one year with no signs of stopping.
Since Playmates released several different lines for various television series and movies, the packaging for each line was completely different to match each one. The Next Generation figures series was virtually identical to the previous year, with the classic Star Trek Next Generation logo across the top of the card, across an illustration of the Enterprise flying forward. The Deep Space Nine cards featured the DS9 logo at the top of the card, over a backdrop of the classic space station. The color theme for these cards was a very attractive purple color. The Generations movie cards featured the Generations logo and artwork at the top of the card, as well as the backdrop. The classic accessories line has the original series logo with the traditional vintage look to it. Overall, each line of figures linked perfectly to its corresponding series very well , and was another example of beautifully done packaging for Playmate’s various Star Trek lines.
