For more information about Mego’s Starsky and Hutch line, see bottom of page for a complete summary.

Starsky and Hutch (1976-1977): Basic Figures

Mego released five brand new figures for their Starsky and Hutch action figure line from 1976 to 1977
with some minor color variations to each one.

Chopper

Market Value:
Boxed $90 – $120
Loose $25 – $40

Chopper
Accessories: Cloth Sweater, Pants, Boots
Years Released: 1976, 1977
Scarcity Factor: Can still be found, but getting tougher each year
Notes: Chopper is the only figure in the Starsky and Hutch line that wasn’t actually modeled from a real character from the show, but rather he was a mix of several different characters, making him kind of a generic bad guy. Chopper comes with his red and white striped sweater and boots.

Dobey

Market Value:
Boxed $200 – $250
Loose $70 – $95

Dobey
Accessories: Cloth Denim Jacket, Pants, Shoes
Years Released: 1976, 1977
Scarcity Factor: Tough to find on the secondary market
Notes: Police Captain Dobey portrayed the role of tough as nails captain, with a heart of gold who just wants to do his part and keep his people safe each day. Dobey comes decked out in his denim looking leisure suit and brown shoes, but once again, no gun.

Huggy Bear

Market Value:
Boxed $110 – $140
Loose $50 – $70

Huggy Bear
Accessories: Cloth Denim Jacket, Pants, Ascot, Shoes, Hat
Years Released: 1976, 1977
Scarcity Factor: Tough to find on the secondary market
Notes: Outside of the title characters, was there anyone more popular on the Starsky and Hutch television show than the original cool cat himself, Huggy Bear. Expertly portrayed by Antonio Fargas, Huggy Bear was the main street informant to Starsky and Hutch, and assisted them in cracking many a cases open on the show. Huggy Bear comes decked out in his suave looking denim leisure suit with a matching hat, black shoes, and an ascot!! It takes a real man to be able to pull an ascot off, and Huggy Bear nailed it.

Hutch

Market Value:
Boxed $100 – $130
Loose $25 – $40

Hutch
Accessories: Cloth Sweater, Vest, Pants, Shoes
Years Released: 1976, 1977
Scarcity Factor: Can still be found, but it’s getting tougher each year
Notes: Portrayed by David Soul in the television series, Detective Ken (Hutch) Hutchinson was the intellectual and more reserved of the pair. Hutch comes complete with his brown “suede” vest, yellow sweater and blue jeans. Like the others in the line, the Hutch packaging has minor color variations to the heading and Mego logo on the card.

Starsky

Market Value:
Boxed $100 – $130
Loose $25 – $40

Starsky
Accessories: Cloth Sweater, Pants, Shoes
Years Released: 1976, 1977

Notes: Portrayed by Paul Michael Glaser in the television series, Detective David Starsky was the streetwise and sometimes rather brash one of the pair. Starsky comes complete with his signature blue sweater and blue jeans. Like the others in the line, the Starsky packaging has minor color variations to the heading and Mego logo on the card.

Notes: When you think of iconic television cars, surely the famous red and white striped Gran Torino from Starsky and Hutch should definitely make the list. I mean just look at it…….it just radiates coolness. Though the cars are both almost identical, there was a distinct difference between the US and UK versions. The US version is motorized with a swivel wheel towards the front for those sharp turns. The US version also comes with a few accessories like a barricade, trash can and fire hydrant. The UK version is not motorized at all, and does not have the additional accessories. Either way, both versions are tough to find in boxed condition and remain highly sought after by collectors.

By 1976, Mego toys had gained quite the reputation as one of the top action figure producers in the world. With such iconic and ultra successful lines such as the World’s Greatest Super Heroes, Star Trek and Planet of the Apes, Mego was truly making all the right moves. Even with their success with their big signature lines, Mego was always looking for more, to add diversity to their brand. Since Mego now had some real clout in the toy industry and were boasting massive toy sale numbers, they now had some extra capital to go out and grab bigger licenses, and they did exactly that with the mega successful television show, Starsky and Hutch. The show, about two streetwise Police Detectives, began in the spring of 1975 and quickly became one of the top rated shows on TV, catapulting their main characters Starsky and Hutch into the spotlight. Several companies jumped on the license to produce products from the show, but the Mego line of 8 inch action figures leaped to the forefront by selling extremely well and proving to be a smash success for Mego.

The Starsky and Hutch Series toy line featured five basic characters, with the classic television interpretations of each. Offered were the classic characters, Huggy Bear the streetwise informant, Doby the gruff police captain, Chopper the generic bad guy, and of course the title characters, Starsky and Hutch themselves. Since Mego stepped up and paid big money for the Starsky and Hutch license, they could now go crazy with designing the figures and getting them just right. The head sculpts for the figures are really beautiful, with a lot of attention to likeness details. In addition to the figures, Mego also released an amazing looking and classic red and white striped Ford Gran Torino car for the title characters to roll around in.

The packaging for the Starsky and Hutch line of action figures definitely fit the theme of the line with the iconic red and white striped Ford Gran Torino sitting on a traditional looking street scene. It was the basic blister pack carded Mego design with the figure inside of a bubble on the right side of the package and the described Starsky and Hutch artwork on the left. The classic Starsky and Hutch logo sat at the top of the actual card flap. The name of the each character sits directly above the blister pack bubble in bold white letters. There were minor color variations to the heading and Mego logo on each card, but none so rare as they make much of a difference in value. The Starsky and Hutch action figure packaging was actually very eye-catching and attractive, that really grabbed your attention on store shelves.
