Battlestar Galactica – Diamond Select

Battlestar Galactica
2007 – 2010 (Diamond Select)

Battlestar Galactica (2007-2010): Playsets

Diamond Select did not release any scale playsets for their action figure line.

Battlestar Galactica (2007-2010): Vehicles

Diamond Select released a small series of resin statues depicting the main ships from the show, but they did not produce any vehicles meant for the 7″ action figures.

When the Sci-Fi channel announced it was bringing back the beloved television series, Battlestar Galactica, fans were more than a bit nervous because of all the announced changes that were being made to the show. The new series would be a re-imagining of the original 1978 series, with the most notable change being that fan favorite character Starbuck would be re-made into a female character. When the new show was finally released in 2003, all was forgiven for those changes and the ratings proved it. The pilot for the new re-imagined Battlestar Galactica show first aired as a mini-series in December 2003, which was followed by four regular seasons, ending in March of 2009. A prequel series, Caprica, was released in 2010 and lasted one season, as well as a web series called Blood and Chrome. Since no major toy companies bid for toy rights to the show, they were wide open and Diamond Select swooped in and began releasing toys in 2007. Diamond Select Toys was founded in 1999 by sister company Diamond Comics Distributors to create collectibles for adult collectors and Battlestar Galactica fit that plan very well.

The first wave of Battlestar Galactica action figures were released in 2007 with a total of seven figures. Three of them were general releases and the other four were exclusives to various outlets. Diamond Select did a good job of mixing up the waves with a nice assortment of characters for each wave. The next two waves were released in 2008, and contained four figures each. A fourth wave was planned for 2009, and even advertised, but sadly never made it to release. It should be noted that one figure from the planned fourth wave did make it to store shelves, as the clean faced Admiral Adama was released as a Toys R Us exclusive. Diamond Select’s Battlestar Galactica line did live on after 2008, with a series of Toys R Us Exclusives that were released from 2008 to 2010. among the final releases were a small set of five different two-packs that were also exclusive to Toys R Us stores in 2010. In addition to the Toy R Us exclusives, Diamond released several other exclusives for the line. In fact, most of the released action figures from this line were an exclusive to some outlet or another. No vehicles or playsets were ever released by Diamond Select for the 7″ action figures.

The packaging for the Diamond Select line of Battlestar Galactica figures was eye catching, with its classic sci-fi style. It featured the iconic Battlestar Galactica logo across the top of the blister pack bubble with the figure being the star of the card at the center. Most of the figures were on a mostly black card with a red pattern being mixed in, but some had a blue pattern mixed instead. A small photo of the character was in the bottom right side of the card. The name of each character was placed on the bottom of the bubble on a black sticker. Many (not all) of the Toys R Us exclusives had the classic Toys R Us Exclusive label on it. Diamond Select did a fantastic job with the packaging on their Battlestar Galactica line, and it was incredibly refreshing to finally see a great assortment of different characters with tons of articulation. This line remains popular to this day with many of the figures staying in high demand among collectors.
