Bionic Woman 1976-1978

Bionic Woman

The Bionic Woman TV series debuted in 1976 as a spin-off from the Six Million Dollar Man. The show and its star, Lindsay Wagner, would become a smash hit, and the toy line soon followed. With the massive success of the Six Million Dollar Man line, Kenner could now take a chance with a female driven action figure series. The toy line consisted of only four figures, with three of them belonging to the title character. Also released were several fashion accessories, a vehicle and four playsets.

For more information about Kenner’s Bionic Woman line from 1976 – 1978, see bottom of the page for a complete summary.

Since the Six Million Dollar Man TV series and its toy line were such massive hits, it was only natural to assume that a spin-off series would also get the same toy treatment, and it certainly did with the Bionic Woman line. The origins of the Bionic Woman series began in the Six Million Dollar Man’s show when Jamie Sommers, portrayed by Lindsay Wagner, made her debut as Steve Austin’s fiancée in 1975. As fate would have it, Jamie had the same rotten luck that Steve had when it came to crashing to the earth, so she received the same bionic treatment that her fiancé, Steve got through O.S.I and Oscar Goldman. The Bionic Woman got her own TV series in January of 1976, and her toy line followed just a few months later. With the massive success of the Six Million Dollar Man line, Kenner could now afford to take a few more chances and create an action figure line catered specifically to girls. This is not to say that boys didn’t purchase these toys too (I myself had a Jamie Sommers figure back then). Kenner guessed correctly as the toy line found its own success and sold extremely well until it eventually came to an end in 1978.

Kenner gave us four figures during the Bionic Woman’s toy run, which included three different versions of the lead character, Jamie Sommers and a Fembot figure for Jamie to beat up on. We got the original Jamie Sommers character with her white shirt and blue pants casual outfit. The second version had the same Jamie character, except she was now wearing a blue jumpsuit and came with the “mission purse”. The last version featured the Jamie Mission Purse figure but changed her outfit to a green fashion dress. Kenner released several different fashion accessories for Jamie to wear that included a Designer Collection, as well as a Budget Fashion Collection. Kenner released two new items for the Bionic Woman line, including a sports car and a massive carriage house playset, which was the largest item that Kenner had ever made at that point. Three other playsets were re-purposed from the Six Million Dollar Man line to fit with the Bionic Woman theme.

The packaging for the Bionic Woman line was virtually identical to the Six Million Dollar Man line. It featured pink and white colored packaging, along with a beautiful portrait of the character on the left side of the card. The figures themselves can be clearly seen front and center through a clear cellophane cover. The only difference in packaging is of course the logo, with the new Bionic Woman’s logo being placed at the bottom of the package. Note: The Bionic Woman’s logo picture did change with each character to match the figure.
