Proposed Barbi Benton Figure

A figure of pop culture favorite, Barbi Benton was also set to be released in 1978, but never made it to retail. The figure was even advertised in catalogs, but Mego decided to not move forward with it. An official statement was never released, but likely had something to do with Barbi’s connection with Playboy magazine, as she had posed nude several times during the early 1970’s.

Mego toys had gained quite the reputation of being a innovator in the action figure industry by the mid 1970’s, with great success of their television and movie franchise lines such as Star Trek, Planet of the Apes, and Wizard of Oz. By this time, Mego had already released individual figures based on sports heroes, Joe Namath and Muhamad Ali, so they now turned their attention towards other popular celebrities of the time. Mego began signing licensing deals with several big name entertainers, including Sonny and Cher, Diana Ross, Suzanne Somers, Captain and Tennille, and Kristy McNichol. Charlie’s Angels was among the hottest shows on television at the time, but Hasbro had already secured its toy rights, so Mego did the next best thing, by signing the individual rights to two of the show’s biggest stars, Farrah Fawcett and Jaclyn Smith. This allowed Mego to create figures and accessories based on the star’s individual likeness without compromising Hasbro’s contract, which I’m sure did not make Hasbro very pleased.

The Sonny and Cher toy line obviously featured Sonny and Cher themselves, along with a bunch of fun accessories such as a stage playset, dressing room, travel trunk, a roadster and lots and lots of fashion outfits. The TV Starz line featured Farrah Fawcett, Jaclyn Smith, Captain and Tennille, Suzanne Somers, Diana Ross, and Kristy McNichol. The Farrah line contained several items including a dressing room, glamour center and several fashion outfits, while the other figures shared a common TV Starz line of fashion outfits to change into. Aside from Sonny and Cher, and Farrah, there were no other accessories created for the TV Starz line.

The packaging for each of these different lines of figures were unique for each one. While they all made up the TV Starz line, Mego wanted to give each their own individual look, so the decision was made to make them all different. I personally think this was the right choice instead of going for an across the board package look. Each figure was featured in an open box format with the focus being on the figure itself. Photos of each character adorned that particular box, depending on which one it was, and each character’s name sat above the box window. Some of the packaging had cut-outs on the back as accessories for the figure, while others did not. The Sonny and Cher, and TV Starz packaging were all fairly simple, but still eye-catching. Some of these figures sold better than others, and the lines came to an end in 1979.
