GI Joe 1989

Hasbro released a ton of new products for the 1989 wave of GI Joe. Added to an already stellar Joe lineup were multiple figures, accessories and vehicles, but no large scale playsets for the 2nd year in a row.  Worst Codename of the year award goes to Scoop, and he was a reporter. Really Hasbro? There were a bunch of smaller sub-sets with vehicles, such as Night Force, Tiger Force, Battleforce 2000, Python Patrol, Slaughter’s Marauders and the Iron Grenadiers.

Just like the previous year, Hasbro released a large amount of new product for their 1989 GI Joe toy line. The Night Force, Tiger Force, Dreadnoks, and Iron Grenadiers lines all returned with new additions. We also got two new sub-sets this year as well, with the addition of Python Patrol and Slaughter’s Marauders. With the numerous sub-sets and mini-teams within the Joe universe now, it was beginning to become a challenge to keep track of who was on what team, but more Joe and Cobra figures meant more awesome battles and more excitement for the kids that were buying them, and that is always a good thing.

Added to an already stellar Joe lineup in 1989 was Backblast, Countdown, and several newer versions of fan favorites such as Deep Six, Rock N Roll, Stalker and Snake Eyes. Cobra gave us a lot of different Vipers, because quite frankly, you can never have enough of them. We got Night Viper, Heat Viper, Alley Viper and even a Frag Viper. Worst Codename of the year award has to go to……Scoop, and he was a reporter. Really Hasbro? As mentioned above, we got a bunch of smaller sub-sets in 1989 and they all came with vehicles. We had vehicles for Night Force, Tiger Force, Battleforce 2000, Python Patrol, Slaughter’s Marauders and the Iron Grenadiers. That’s a lot of different vehicles, to say the least. One thing we didn’t get was a large scale playset. This was the 2nd year in a row that Hasbro said no to big playsets.

Like years past, the 1989 GI Joe packaging was virtually identical to its previous years with small differences here and there. Once again, the figures that belonged to the previously mentioned mini groups, such as Tiger Force, Iron Grenadiers, Battleforce 2000, Python Patrol or Slaughter’s Marauders, had their respective logos added to the packaging.
