GI Joe 1991

Like the previous year, 1991 was a quiet year for the GI Joe line. Hasbro did not release any large scale playsets, new accessories or packs, and only one real new sub-set (Eco-Warriors). The Super Sonic Fighters made their debut, but was basically the same as the Sonic Fighters line from the previous year. The biggest change in 1991 was the unusually low amount of vehicles, as Hasbro released the smallest number of vehicles since the early days of 1982.

For more information about Hasbro’s GI Joe line from 1991, see bottom of the page for a complete summary.

Like the previous year, 1991 was a relatively quiet year for the GI Joe toy line. Once again, Hasbro did not release any large scale playsets, new accessories or packs, and only one real new sub-set (Eco-Warriors). The Super Sonic Fighters series was also released, but it was basically the same as the Sonic Fighters line from the previous year. The biggest change this year was the unusually small number of vehicles released, as Hasbro only produced 6 new vehicles and a few small flying glider sets. This was the fewest number of released vehicles since the early days of the toy line back in 1982 and 1983.

New to the Joe lineup in 1991 was Big Ben, Heavy Duty and Tracker, along with newer versions of fan favorites such as Dusty, Grunt, General Hawk, Sci-Fi, Low-Light and a 4th version of Snake Eyes. Cobra gave us some cool looking new figures as well, such as Desert Scorpion, Crimson Guard Immortal, and Red Star, along with new versions of Snow Serpent, Cobra BAT, and a new 4th version of Cobra Commander. Worst Codename of the year award goes to Mercer……….who just happens to be a mercenary. Really Hasbro? We got two new sub-sets in 1991, with Eco-Warriors and Super Sonic Fighters, which were just like the Sonic Fighters from the year before but they added the word Super (not sure if that classifies as new or not). Once again, the Sonic Fighters came with large backpacks that had built-in phrases for each character. No large scale playsets were releases this year, as well as no new accessories or packs.

Once again, Hasbro went with the new more colorful packaging, instead of the standard black background. As always, each card had the figure in front of an explosion or other backdrop piece, but they now used multiple colors as the central color and ditched the plain black. The new sub-set lines also had different packaging the Eco-Warriors having a yellowish card background and the Super Sonic Fighters having a kind of psychedelic looking pink circle pattern.
