GI Joe 1985

The 1985 wave of Joe’s saw the release of 19 new figures and one exclusive, Tripwire. Major characters such as Lady Jaye, Shipwreck, Flint and a brand new version of Snake Eyes with his wolf, Timber were among the highlights. The Dreadnoks made their toy debut, as well as several vehicles and accessories. However, the biggest thing to happen in 1985 was the U.S.S Flagg. Measuring in at a solid 7 feet long and almost 4 feet wide, this was the largest playset ever created for any action figure line.

By 1985, the GI Joe toy line had firmly entrenched itself in the international toy market. With the Star Wars toy line winding down due to no new movies, GI Joe really grabbed a hold of the toy industry in a big way. Transformers and Masters of the Universe were still around but GI Joe was sitting at the top each year they released new toys. The GI Joe animated series and the Marvel comic book were still thriving as well, so it was a good time to be a GI Joe kid or a collector. Not to mention the 1985 line saw the release of some extremely inventive and creative new figures and vehicles.

1985 saw the release of some major Joe characters with Flint, Lady Jaye, Shipwreck, Dusty and a brand new version of Snake Eyes with his faithful wolf, Timber. Not to be forgotten about, Cobra released some pretty cool characters as well, like Crimson Guard, Frog Man, and the Crimson Guard Commanders, Tomax and Xamot. The Dreadnoks also made their toy debut as well. But the biggest thing to happen to Joe in 1985 was the U.S.S Flagg. Oh…….Wow! This thing was just amazing on so many different levels. Measuring in a solid 7 feet long and almost 4 feet wide, this was by far the largest playset or vehicle ever created for any action figure line. Major kudos to Hasbro for having the stones to make something this big. With a retail price of $109.99 in 1985, this was one of those dream list items for just about every kid on the planet.

Once again, The 1985 GI Joe packaging was almost identical to its previous years with very faint differences here and there. Hasbro probably didn’t see much of a reason to change the packaging, so why fix something that isn’t broken? The new Dreadnoks characters featured a new “Dreadnoks The Enemy” tag across the top of each of their cards.
