Following the success of the two previous years, the 1984 Joe line saw the release of 11 new carded figures, along with a new version of Cobra Commander with his hooded mask, which was offered as a mail-order promotion. Hasbro also gave us 11 new vehicles, but for the first time in their short history, no new largescale playsets were released. 1984 saw the introduction of two new small scale accessory lines, Battle Stations and Battlefield Accessories. Both of these sets were basically mini playsets and gave our figures something to do when they weren’t hanging out at the Headquarters playset.

With the Cartoon series and Marvel Comic Book series both in full swing, Hasbro added some hugely important characters for 1984 that would go on to become GI Joe legends, such as Duke, Roadblock, Spirit, Mutt, Baroness, and Storm Shadow. Based on how iconic these characters would go on to become in the Joe universe, it’s hard to believe they weren’t original Joe characters. Another fan favorite character that was introduced this year was Zartan, who was only available by purchasing his signature swamp skier, the Chameleon.

Just like the previous years, the GI Joe packaging in 1984 was virtually identical to past lines. Once again, the packaging was simple but attractive and pleasing to the eye. The “Cobra Enemy” tag continued to be placed at the top of the cards that featured Cobra characters. Vehicles and Accessories also remained the same as years past.
