Hasbro changed things up in 1993, and completely re-vamped the GI Joe design. Instead of having basic Joe’s, Cobra’s and various sub-sets, Hasbro now classified all main figures under the Battle Corps line. This was a big money saver for Hasbro and a way to re-issue past figures with few changes. Also introduced, were the Mega Marines, Star Brigade series, and a line of Street Fighter 2 characters. Several exclusives were produced in 1993, as well as a small number of vehicles.

GI Joe (1993): Battle Corps Figures

Hasbro released a total of 36 figures for their Battle Corps line, with two of the figures having different versions. This was a massive number of figures, but most of them were just re-paints of previously released characters.

The Mega Marines were a brand new sub-set of figures released in 1993. The set basically contained Joe and Cobra figures with a futuristic looking Marine look. There were several new Cobra Vipers released in this series, which can be tough to find on the secondary market.

The Ninja Force team returned in 1993 with seven new, or not so-new, characters for the group.

The Star Brigade was yet another new GI joe series released in 1993, and would go on to a second wave in 1994. The concept of this series was basically Joe versus Cobra in space.

Hasbro joined up with the video game company, Capcom in 1993 to produce a line of GI Joe based, Street Fighter II figures. Hasbro used previous GI Joe bodies with some new head sculpts for the Street Fighter line. It was becoming apparent that Hasbro was reaching for anything they could to keep their Joe line afloat at this point.

Hasbro released a whopping six new mail-order exclusives for 1993. Three were individual figures, while three others were exclusive sets of multiple figures.

The Dino Hunters was originally going to be the beginning of a new sub-set series for GI Joe, but never got past this first release due to poor overall sales of the Joe line at the time.

Three new vehicle were released for the Ninja Force line in 1993, with all three being re-paints of previously released vehicles.

Three new vehicle were released for the Star Brigade line in 1993, with the Invader being a re-paint of a previously released vehicle, while the other two being new designs to the Joe line.

GI Joe (1993): Street Fighter 2 Vehicles

Hasbro and Capcom got together to release three new vehicles for the Street Fighter II line and one new playset, with the Dragon Fortress.

Hasbro wanted to really change things up in 1993, so they completely re-vamped how the GI Joe toy line is designed and marketed. Instead of having your basic Joe’s, Cobra’s and various smaller sub-sets, Hasbro now classified all figures under the Battle Corps line. They also introduced the Star Brigade series, which was set in outer-space. This was done for a number of reasons, but the biggest one was simply to save money. This was a way for Hasbro to re-issue past figures with very few changes, and still classify them as “new” because of the Battle Corps packaging. The move away from the basic Joe’s and Cobra’s and into the Battle Corps line was a huge attempt by Hasbro to jump-start the toy line again by bringing back lots of fan-favorite characters, but not have to re-invent the wheel to do it.

Most of what was issued in 1993 were re-paints or re-issues, but there were a few new figures, such as Colonel Courage, Crimson Guard Commander, Gristle, Long Arm, Mace and Night Creeper Leader. These were all solid additions to the Joe line. Hasbro also gave us several fan-favorite characters, such as Cobra Commander, Snake Eyes, Roadblock, Duke, Bazooka and Wet-Suit. We also got a couple of new sub-sets with Mega-Marines and Star Brigade, along with a 2nd series of Ninja Force. The strangest thing Hasbro did for the Joe line in 1993 was the introduction of Street Fighter 2 characters to the Joe world, along with a few vehicles. There were no large scale playsets or accessory packs issued this year.

The packaging for the 1993 line was in line with what Hasbro had given us the last couple of years with the classic GI Joe logo on top of a now more colorful card. Each card had a picture of the character in an action pose to the left of the figure bubble. As noted above, the new Battle Corps logo was now at the top of each card as well. As usual, each sub-set also got new packaging with their respective logos and color schemes.
