GI Joe – Adventure Team 1970-1973
Due to declining sales towards the end of the decade, and America being involved in an unpopular war in Vietnam, Hasbro was in the unusual situation of how to promote a military toy line without being so militaristic. That’s when the Adventure Team was born. Instead of fighting wars around the world, the Joe’s would now go on adventures. Many of the same characters and accessories were recycled from the 1960’s, along with some great new items. One iconic upgrade for GI Joe was the addition of a flocked hair feature, giving the figures a more realistic feel to hair and beards.
For more information about Hasbro’s GI Joe Adventure Team from 1970-1973, see bottom of the page for a complete summary.

In 1964, Hasbro introduced GI Joe to the world and it was a massive hit to say the least. The toy line was based on America’s military branches and the United States was still in a very patriotic time period, but all that changed with the Vietnam War. Hasbro saw their GI Joe toy sales take a sharp decline towards the end of the decade and this was mainly due to America being involved in a very unpopular war in Vietnam, so public opinion of the military was not at its peak. Hasbro was placed in the unusual situation of deciding how to promote a toy line based on the military, but not be so militaristic. That’s when the idea of the Adventure Team was born. Instead of fighting wars all over the world, the Joe’s would now go on adventures all over the world. Hasbro hedged their bets that downplaying the military aspect of GI Joe would get the toy line back on track, and they were absolutely right.
Hasbro knew they already had a good thing with the GI Joe toy line, so with a little adjustment and fine tuning, The Adventure Team would be a hit too. Many of the same characters from the 60’s were re-used for the new version with a few fresh faces mixed in. Hasbro re-cycled several accessory sets and packs for the Adventure Team line, but still introduced many new sets as well. Some real quality products were produced for the new Joe line, which kept GI Joe relevant to a new generation. One massive new upgrade for GI Joe was the addition of the flocked hair feature. This gave a more realistic feel to hair and beards for the Adventure Team. It turned out to be a huge hit and extremely popular with the kids who were buying them.
The GI Joe packaging was similar to past Joe lines with some really beautiful artwork and the classic GI Joe logo, but the new Adventure Team logo was now added to some new packaging as well. Hasbro still used some previously released packaging and artwork for the re-releases but still managed to introduce some great new art to the newer packaging. All in all, the move from military to adventurers really paid off in a big way with Hasbro creating some fantastic detail and great looking accessories.
