WWF REAL WRESTLING ACTION
1990 – 1994 (Hasbro)

Hasbro’s WWF Real Wrestling Action series ran for five years from 1990 to 1994, and produced eleven waves of fun and colorful action figures. Since the toy licensing rights to the WWF were available after LJN went out of business, Hasbro snatched them up and immediately began producing new toys. Each figure stood about 4″ tall, with four points of articulation. These figures were essentially miniature replicas of the wrestlers, but with a more cartoony kind of look to them.

WWF Real Wrestling Action (1990-1994): Series One

The premier wave of the WWF Real Wrestling Action figures included 12 different characters of the most popular wrestlers of the time. Included were such big names as Hulk Hogan, Macho Man Savage, Andre the Giant, Jake “The Snake” Roberts and Ultimate Warrior.

WWF Real Wrestling Action (1990-1994): Series Two

The second wave of WWF Real Wrestling Action figures featured only 9 new figures, with four being new versions of Hulk Hogan, Macho Man, Ted DiBiase and Ultimate Warrior. Also included were first time figures of fan favorites Rowdy Roddy Piper, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Honky Tonk Man and the rare Dusty Rhodes figure.

WWF Real Wrestling Action (1990-1994): Series Three

The third wave of WWF Real Wrestling Action figures featured 12 figures, with five being new versions of Hulk Hogan, Macho Man, Big Bos Man, Brutus Beefcake and Ultimate Warrior. Also included were first time figures of fan favorites Koko B. Ware, Greg Valentine, and Sgt. Slaughter.

The fourth wave of WWF Real Wrestling Action figures featured only 4 new figures, with all being first time figures of fan favorites Bret “The Hitman” Hart, British Bulldog, Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat and The Undertaker.

WWF Real Wrestling Action (1990-1994): Series Five

The fifth wave of WWF Real Wrestling Action figures featured 10 figures, with two being new versions of Hulk Hogan and Macho Man Savage. Also included were first time figures of fan favorites Rick Martel, Sid Justice, Warlord and Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart.

The Sixth wave of WWF Real Wrestling Action figures featured only 6 figures, with all being first time figures featuring such fan favorites as Ric Flair, Tatanka, Papa Shango and Tito Santana.

WWF Real Wrestling Action (1990-1994): Series Seven

The Seventh wave of WWF Real Wrestling Action figures featured only 6 new figures, with all being first time figures featuring such fan favorites as Shawn Michaels, Owen Hart, and Razor Ramon. Hasbro changed up the packaging color by making it yellow to separate it from other waves. This would continue for the next several new releases.

WWF Real Wrestling Action (1990-1994): Series Eight

The Eighth wave of WWF Real Wrestling Action figures featured only 6 new figures, with three being new versions of Bret “The Hitman” Hart, Mr. Perfect and The Undertaker. The remaining three were first time figures of fan favorites Bam Bam Bigelow, Lex Luger, and Yokozuna. Hasbro once again changed package color by making it red to separate it from other waves.

WWF Real Wrestling Action (1990-1994): Series Nine

The Ninth wave of WWF Real Wrestling Action figures featured 6 figures, with three being new versions of Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Tatanka, and Million Dollar Man Ted DiBiase. The remaining three were first time figures of fan favorites The Steiner Brothers and Doink the Clown. Hasbro once again changed package color by making it purple to separate it from other waves.

WWF Real Wrestling Action (1990-1994): Series Ten

The Tenth wave of WWF Real Wrestling Action figures featured 8 figures, with two being new versions of Razor Ramon and Shawn Michaels. The remaining six were first time figures, featuring fan favorite tag teams, The Bushwhackers and Headshrinkers, along with Giant Gonzalez and Marty Jannetty. Hasbro changed the package back to blue for Wave 10.

WWF Real Wrestling Action (1990-1994): Series Eleven

The eleventh and final wave of Hasbro’s WWF Real Wrestling Action figures featured 7 figures, with two being new versions of Crush and Yokozuna. The remaining five were first time figures, featuring fan favorites The Smoking Gunn’s, The 1-2-3 Kid, Adam Bomb and Ludvig Borga. Hasbro changed the package color again, with it being green for this wave.

WWF Real Wrestling Action (1990-1994): Tag Team Series

Hasbro released a series of the five biggest Tag Teams in the WWF at the time, including the Bushwhackers, Demolition, Legion of Doom, Nasty Boys and The Rockers. These were all previously figures except for the Nasty Boys, Brian Knobbs and Jerry Sags, who were brand new. The re-released characters featured different colored costumes to separate them from the other individual releases.

Hasbro also released three different exclusive figures that were only available through mail order. They were Hulk Hogan, Bret Hart and the Ultimate Warrior.

Hasbro also released a small series of two different 12″ figures that included Hulk Hogan and the Ultimate Warrior. These bigger figures did have some articulation and allowed for limited posing.

WWF Real Wrestling Action (1990-1994): Accessories & Playsets

Hasbro released a few different versions of their “Official Wrestling Ring” playsets from their WWF action figure line. In addition to the original release, there was a Sound Module version, as well as a JC Penny’s version that included two figures. There was also a “King of the Ring” version that came with different colors. A role play Championship Belt was also released.

In the early 1990’s, the World Wrestling Federation continued their unparalleled surge in popularity, captivating audiences worldwide. Riding the wave of this wrestling phenomenon, Hasbro partnered with the WWF to create an action figure line that definitely etch its place in toy culture of the 90’s. Each figure was designed to resemble the WWF wrestlers, complete with facial features and colorful costumes. They were made of a solid molded plastic, with limited mobility and articulation. Each figure came with its unique trademark move, allowing fans to recreate epic wrestling matches within the confines of their living rooms. One of the defining features of Hasbro’s line was their ability for each character to execute their signature moves with a simple action.

The line was spread out into eleven waves of figures, from 1990 to 1994. The premier wave of the WWF Real Wrestling Action figures in 1990 included 12 different characters of the more popular wrestlers of the time. Included were such big names as Hulk Hogan, Macho Man Savage, Andre the Giant, Jake the Snake and Ultimate Warrior. Following waves would go on to include more of the biggest names in the WWF of the 1990’s. The first six waves featured a powder blue packaging, but all other waves thereafter changed the color up to better identify each individual wave. Also introduced for the line was multiple versions of the Official Wrestling Ring playset, a Championship Wrestling Belt, a series of Tag Team packs and two 12″ figures.

The Hasbro WWF action figure line was not only a commercial success, but also left an indelible mark on pop culture. Over the years, these action figures have become sought-after collectibles among wrestling collectors. Their enduring appeal stems from the nostalgia they evoke, reminding fans of a golden era in professional wrestling and the joy of imaginative play.
