World’s Greatest Super Heroes 1972-1980

Mego began releasing 12 Inch action figures in 1977 to try and expand their incredibly successful World’s Greatest Super-Heroes line. The 12″ figures began with a few larger versions of their existing 8 inch figures, but then grew to include different versions of some of our favorite super hero characters, that included Batman, Superman, Robin, Spiderman, Hulk, Captain America, and Wonder Woman. In addition, Mego released some of the figures with Fly-Away for Magnetic action for some extra fun.

During its run of 12 Inch figures from 1977 to 1979, Mego gave us some fantastic and creative figures for the World’s Greatest Super Hero line. This included several ultra popular characters from both major comic book lines. There were a few different versions of Batman; two versions of Robin: three versions of Superman; a few different packaging variations of Spiderman; a few different packaging versions of Wonder Woman; the Incredible Hulk and Captain America. In addition, there was a small line of four Superman The Movie figures that included Superman, Jor-El, General Zod and Lex Luthor. There was also a small series of figures based on the Wonder Woman TV series that included Wonder Woman, Nubia, Queen Hippolyte and Steve Trevor.

The packaging for the World’s Greatest Super Heroes 12 inch figures varied with each characters, but was colorful and eye catching, which had become a staple for Mego. The early releases in 1977 featured very similar packaging and color schemes as the traditional 8″ versions of the figures. Later versions would lose that colorful flare in favor a more traditional white box, adorned with the character’s logo and an illustration of each character. The Superman: The Movie series featured some amazing artwork that captured the spirit of the Superman movie and multiple characters. The Wonder Woman TV series of figures featured a sky blue color scheme and went heavy with the Wonder Woman illustrations and a lovely photo of Lynda Carter. Overall, Mego did fairly well with their 12 inch figures and had a nice three year run. These figures remain very popular with fans and collectors and are very sought after on the secondary market.
