After Mego’s epic line of World’s Greatest Super Heroes ended in 1980, the DC Comics toy license was back up for grabs. Kenner happily secured those toy rights in the early 1980’s. Since their iconic Star Wars toy line was coming to an end, they needed another big time franchise. They launched their DC Super Powers Collection line in 1984 with twelve action figures, three vehicles, a Hall of Justice playset and an official figure carry case. The world of DC comics was doing quite well at the time, and with so many iconic characters to chose from, a superhero line just made sense.
After a very successful launch in 1984, Kenner released their second wave of the Super Powers Collection series in 1985. This new wave included eleven action figures, three vehicles, and a couple of mail order exclusive figures, with one being Clark Kent. The premier wave of the Super Powers line posted some big sales numbers and were very well-received from kids, which proved that DC Comics could definitely sustain a new toy line for Kenner. So there was high hopes for the second wave and they did not disappoint!
Kenner released their third and final wave of the Super Powers Collection series in 1986. This new wave included ten new action figures and two vehicles, with no other accessories. The premier wave of the Super Powers line was a huge success, but interest in the Super Powers line was waning by 1986. This was mainly attributed to the series being front loaded with the most well known characters initially and then following waves being filled with secondary characters that didn’t resonate with kids. In addition, there was intense competition for space in the toy aisles due to GI Joe, Transformers, M.A.S.K and others.
