Super Power Collection (Kenner) – 1985

After a very successful launch in 1984, Kenner released their second wave of the Super Powers Collection series in 1985. This new wave included eleven action figures, three vehicles, and a couple of mail order exclusive figures, with one being Clark Kent. The premier wave of the Super Powers line posted some big sales numbers and were very well-received from the kids of that generation, which proved that DC Comics could definitely sustain a new toy line for Kenner.

For more information about Kenner’s 1985 wave of the DC Super Powers Collection line, see bottom of page for a complete summary.

Notes: The Clark Kent figure was a mail order exclusive in 1985 and only available through Kenner Toys. All you had to do was send in 5 proof of purchase seals from any five Kenner Super Powers products and mail them off. Clark came with no accessories but this was a great figure by Kenner, and it’s a shame they didn’t offer more alter ego characters this way.

Steppenwolf (Mail Order)

Without Packaging $22 – $30

Steppenwolf (Mail Order)

Notes: Steppenwolf was made available by Kenner as a Premium Mail Order figure in 1985, before the regular carded version of Steppenwolf was made available later in the year. The figure could be obtained by redeeming 5 proof of purchases of any Super Power product. Along with the figure was a record called “The Darkseid Saga”.

Super Powers Collection: Series Two (1985): Playsets

Kenner released only one playset for their Super Powers line, and that was the Hall of Justice released the year prior. There were no others for the 1985 wave.

Super Powers Collection: Series Two (1985): Vehicles

There were three vehicles released for the Super Powers line in 1985, with the Darkseid Destroyer, Delta Probe One and Kalibak Bolder Bomber.

Darkseid Destroyer

Market Value:
Boxed $175- $250
Loose $50 – $75

Darkseid Destroyer
Accessories: Vehicle, Center Cannons x 2, Side Cannons x 2, Wings, Center Seat, Side Seats x 2, Seat Belts x 2, Decals
Years Released: 1985
Difficulty To Find: Less Common – Appears often but some hunting needed
Notes: The Darkseid Destroyer is one of the bigger vehicles produced for the Super Powers line. It can fit up to three figures inside and the side seats can be uncoupled from the wings, as well as the center one. These three seats can connect to create a smaller vehicle. It comes with battle ready cannons, movable flight wings and power action sound. It also has omega beam light action, so lights and sound all around!

Delta Probe One

Market Value:
Boxed $120 – $160
Loose $40 – $60

Delta Probe One
Accessories: Vehicle, Side Cannons, Top Cannon, Opening Canopy, Demobilizer Bomb, Decals
Years Released: 1985
Difficulty To Find: Less Common – Appears often but some hunting needed
Notes: The Delta Probe One is described as the “Battling Spaceship of the Super Powers Heroes”. The box shows Robin using the ship, but it could be used by any of the good guys. The ship comes with a Villain Detection Radar System, Opening Canopy, Demobilizer Bomb, Side and Upper Cannons, and a Villain Catcher to grab the bad guys.

Kalibak Bolder Bomber

Market Value:
Boxed $100 – $140
Loose $25 – $40

Kalibak Bolder Bomber
Accessories: Vehicle, Spring Loaded Maces, Removable Spearheads x 2, Grinding Missiles x 2, Catapult, Boulder, Decals
Years Released: 1985
Difficulty To Find: Moderate Difficulty – Takes patience and appears less often
Notes: Since Kalibak is a vicious brute of a bad guy, it only stands to reason that his ship would be too. It’s described as the “Cruel Crusher’s Massive Machine”, which is appropriate. The Boulder Bomber comes with spring loaded maces, removable spearheads, grinding teeth in the front and a catapult that launches boulders.

So there was high hopes for the second wave and they did not disappoint!

Since Kenner already released most of their heavy hitters in the DC universe in the first wave, this second wave featured a couple of big names, then some lesser (but still fun) characters. Featured in the wave were Darkseid, DeSaad, Dr. Fate, Firestorm, Green Arrow, Kalibak, Mantis, Martian Manhunter, Parademon, Red Tornado and Steppenwolf. Green Arrow, Martian Manhunter and Darkseid were certainly big names in the DC world but there were a few that weren’t nearly as iconic. Kenner continued to play it safe with some more recognizable names. Once again, manty figures (not all) came with some type of accessory and all figures had a unique action feature for each. In addition to the figures, Kenner also gave us three vehicles (Delta Probe One, Kalibak Bolder Bomber, Darkseid Destroyer) and two mail order figures, Steppenwolf and Clark Kent.

Once again, the packaging for the Super Powers Collection figures was bright and colorful with beautiful artwork. Each figure was on a traditional blister card, which allowed for those great packaging graphics. The general color scheme was an attractive blue with a wide yellow stripe going across horizontally. The figure was to the left of the card, with the classic “Super Powers Collection” logo directly above. To the right of the blister card was a beautiful illustration on the particular character with the name above the illustration. There was a small talk bubble above the character illustration with each figure’s action feature inside of it. Each card back featured all of that wave’s figures and accessories, along with a small card bio of the character. Overall, the Super Powers Collection has become an iconic staple of the decade and its packaging certainly lends to that status.
