Star Wars: Rebels (2014-2015): 12 Inch Figures

After a hiatus for several years, Hasbro brought back their 12 Inch figure series for the new Disney era of shows and movies. These Rebels figures were not very detailed with very little articulation, but had a pretty decent character selection. Due to the lackluster effort by Hasbro, the series did not sell very well and came to a quick end.

When the Walt Disney Entertainment Company purchased Lucasfilm in October of 2013, they promised us lots of new Star Wars content and they certainly delivered. Not only was there several new movies, Lucasfilm also gave us a replacement for the fan favorite Clone Wars series that came to an end the year prior. Star Wars: Rebels was released in October of 2014, and takes place 14 years after Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith and progresses toward the events of the original Episode IV – A New Hope. The show followed in the same vein as the Clone Wars series, and was well received by fans and critics alike. The show produced a new action figure line by Hasbro, of course, with a mixed assortment of characters and sub-sets spanning multiple movies. The design and sculpts were decently done, and the line sold well (not great) at retail.

The packaging on the Star Wars: Rebels line was actually quite nicely done. The figures were centered on a traditional bubble pack with the card done in the shape of a classic Stormtrooper helmet with the Star Wars logo at the top in an orange theme. The name of each character sat directly underneath the figure, with whatever movie the character was from. The packaging was unique and really stood out on the toy aisles. As far as the line itself, Hasbro gave us a total of 25 action figures, with some being re-issues from past lines. In addition, we also got several different 12 inch figures, 12 vehicles, and several multipacks for the line. There was also a Digital Release Commemorative Collection that was produced during this time period to commemorate the release of the Star Wars movies on Digital/Blu-ray format.

Star Wars: Rebels proved to be a big success for Disney and a great start to the new modern Star Wars era. With the previous Clone Wars series seeing such a massive line of toys and action figures, it was a bit of a disappointment to see such a weak character selection and low number of figures for Rebels. As a result, the toy line suffered a bit. Hasbro had access to a large number of new characters, vehicles and creatures but just didn’t really take advantage of them. It seemed that Hasbro started out strong from the gates with their Rebels line, but then just kind of gave up before the race ended. Overall, the line sold well at first, but eventually faded due to a lack of product. A few of the vehicles and multipacks can reach moderate prices but overall, most items from the Rebels toy line can be easily found on the secondary market.
