Solo: A Star Wars Story

Solo: A Star Wars Story – 2018

Solo: A Star Wars Story was released in May of 2018, and had the rotten luck of following up one of the most divisive Star Wars projects ever made, The Last Jedi. The ill will lingering from the Last Jedi certainly affected the new Solo movie, as well as Hasbro’s toy line based on the movie. Neither was not very successful and it showed. Hasbro released a line of 22 basic figures with some simply being re-releases from past lines. There was also several multipacks, vehicles and a small line of 12 inch figures.

Solo: Star Wars Story (2018): Basic Figure Line

Hasbro released 22 action figures for their Solo: A Star Wars Story line in 2018, with more than a few characters simply being re-issues from past lines. The few original Solo figures had decent sculpting, but the entire line just seemed rather uninspired.

When the Walt Disney Entertainment Company purchased Lucasfilm in October of 2013, they promised us more Star Wars movies, and they certainly delivered. Not only was there the continuation of the Skywalker Saga in Episodes 7, 8, and 9, but Disney released two Star Wars “Stories” with Rogue One and Solo. Force Awakens went on to become the biggest domestic box office movie of all time, but The Last Jedi was incredibly Divisive, to say the least. Unfortunately for Lucasfilm, a lot of those bad feelings were unfairly passed on to Solo: A Star Wars Story. The movie wasn’t a masterpiece, but it was certainly entertaining and enjoyable. The movie produced a new action figure line by Hasbro, of course, with a mixed assortment of characters and sub-sets spanning multiple movies. The design and sculpts were fairly well done, but it was definitely an odd choice of characters and the line did not sell very well at retail.

The packaging on the Solo: A Star Wars Story line had a nicely drawn picture of each character on the right side of the card and not much else. The plain white cards and packages had a yellow side theme to them, with the Star Wars logo also done in yellow. The blister cards were fairly plain and were easy to blend in with everything else on the store shelves. In regards to the offered product, Hasbro gave us a total of 22 action figures, with some being re-issues from past lines. In addition, we also go 22 different 12 inch figures, 6 vehicles, 2 playsets and several multipacks for the line. The Solo line also had a new Force Link 2.0 feature that activated light and sound effects when when the Force Link 2.0 technology was brought near the 3.75-inch-scale figures.

Solo: A Star War Story was not a big hit at the box office, and fans were very divided over the movie. As a result, the toy line suffered. Like “Rogue One” and “The Last Jedi”, this line was somewhat limited, and just seemed much more could have done with it. It almost seemed that Hasbro kind of “mailed it in” on the Solo action figure line because of all the behind the scenes issues and turmoil at Lucasfilm as a result of the Last Jedi fallout. The line sold did not stay on the store shelves long, and was shortly relegated to bargain bins across the county. A couple of the vehicles (Millennium Falcon, Tie Fighter) and multipacks can reach moderate prices but overall, most items from the Solo toy line can be easily found on the secondary market.
