Saga Legends / Mission Series – 2013
With the last new Star Wars movie being released in 2005 and the Clone Wars series winding down, it seemed that Hasbro was starting to run out of ideas. Since Disney had officially purchased Lucasfilm in October of 2012, this was a bit of a strange period for the Star Wars franchise. Since nobody really knew Disney’s true direction as of yet, Hasbro rolled out a re-tread line of toys in 2013 called Saga Legends and another set called the Mission Series, which were simply two-packs. There were 16 basic figures with all being re-releases from past lines, along with 10 Mission Series sets. There was also a few vehicles, multipacks and a small line of 12 inch figures. It should also be noted these figures had very little in the way of articulation as well.

It should also be noted these figures had very little in the way of articulation and were not particularly liked by fans and collectors. Needless to say, this line was not very well received by fans and did not end up selling very well. The packaging design was probably the best part of this line, with the character selection and sculpts seeming to be nothing but place fillers until Disney started cranking up their Star Wars machine in earnest.
The packaging on the Star Wars Saga Legends/Mission Series line was actually quite nice and eye-catching. The figures were centered on a traditional bubble pack with a die-cut card. The logo for this line was Darth Vader reaching his hand out in a menacing way, with a dark blue and red color scheme. The Star Wars logo was positioned at the bottom of the bubble in yellow. The name of each character, as well as which movie they came from was directly underneath the logo in white lettering. The packaging was very pleasing to the eye and really stood out on the toy aisles. As far as the line itself…..not so much. Hasbro gave us a total of 16 lightly articulated action figures, with most being re-issues, and 10 Mission Series two-packs. In addition, we also got a small line of 12 inch figures, a few vehicles, and four multipacks that that featured two new combinations put together for this line. The two Battle of Geonosis Multipacks are definitely the stars of this line.
The Star Wars Saga Legends/Mission Series line was not a big success for Hasbro or Lucasfilm. Disney would go on to release their first official movie or television project the following year with Star Wars: Rebels, so 2013 was truly a bit of transition year for the Star Wars franchise. As a result, this toy line suffered a bit without a clear path or direction. Overall, the line did not sell very well, but a few of the multipacks and vehicles can reach moderate secondary market prices but most items from the Saga Legends/Mission Series toy line can be easily found on the secondary market.
