Princess of Power (Wave 1) – 1985
Mattel was having massive success with their Masters of the Universe line, and a new spin-off series called Princess of Power was created. The Princess of Power line proved to be a major hit when it was released in 1985, and a new animated series would soon follow on March 22, 1985. The first wave gave us 9 figures, 3 horse companions, several fashion accessories and a vehicle. Mattel also produced the Crystal Castle playset, which was the headquarters for the Great Rebellion.

Mattel was riding a massive wave of success with their Masters of the Universe line during its initial toy run, and was so successful that a new spin-off series called Princess of Power was created. For all intensive purposes, this was basically the same MOTU story line with all the main characters being female. Since Mattel had long mastered the female toy business with their ultra successful Barbie line, they knew what it took to market to that demographic, so why not a female action figure toy line? Why not indeed, as the Princess of Power line proved to be a major hit when it was released in 1985. The Princess of Power animated series by Filmation would be released on March 22, 1985 and ran for 93 episodes until it was finally cancelled on December 2, 1986. Like the MOTU, the animated series for Princess of Power acted as a 24 minute long commercial for toy sales. Surprisingly, there was no original comic books series to accompany the show.
The first wave of the POP line, gave us 9 brand new figures in 1985, including most of the central characters in the POP universe. The Great Rebellion team acted as the good guys and got the majority of figures from the first wave with Angella, Bow, Castaspella, Double Trouble, Frosta, Glimmer, Kowl and of course, the main woman herself, She-Ra. The Evil Horde only got one new character and that was Catra. Of course, many of the Evil Horde characters had already been produced in the MOTU line, so it wasn’t hard to get more bad guys to battle She-Ra and friends. Mattel also produced the Crystal Castle playset, which was a headquarters of sorts for the Great Rebellion team, as well as the Butterflyer vehicle. Three horse companions and several new fashion accessory sets were also made available for the first wave.
The packaging for the Princess of Power line featured the POP logo at the top of the card, just above a pink starburst that seemed to jump out at you, along with the name of the character above the bubble. The overall color scheme was a pink and purple scheme that fit the theme very nicely. A beautifully drawn portrait of She-Ra riding her steed, Swift Wind, sat directly in the middle of the card, and was the same portrait on every wave one card, regardless of the character or allegiance. Overall, the packaging was simple but very attractive looking, and worked well for the Princess of Power line.
