Art Asylum was founded back in 1996 by Digger Mesch and Donna Soldano, and produced toys for popular toy brands of the time before branching out on their own. Art Asylum acquired the toy license for Star Trek in 2000 and began releasing Star Trek toys in 2001 with the show, Enterprise. In 2003, they began their Original Series line, which ran through 2010. This line included many classic figures and fan favorites from the Original Series of the 60’s, as well as different versions of the show’s leads. This line was very well done with some fantastic sculpts and costuming. These figures remain popular to this day with fans and collectors.
The Star Trek: Original Series action figure line by Art Asylum/Diamond Select included 5 standard waves of figures, along with a 40th Anniversary series, several exclusives, multipacks and a few roleplay accessories. The standard figures included multiple versions of the main Enterprise characters, Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, Dr. McCoy, Scotty, Uhura, Chekov and Sulu. In addition, there were several fun alien characters, such as Khan, The Gorn, Vina the Orion Slave Girl, a Romulan and Klingon Commander’s Kor and Kang. There was a 40th Anniversary wave featuring Captain Kirk and Pike in their command chairs, along with several other exclusives from various outlets. Art Asylum also produced a few different multipacks that included either two or three figures. Finally, there also a few different roleplay accessories that included different versions of the Starfleet Phaser and a Communicator.
The packaging for Art Asylum’s Star Trek: Original Series figures was very attractive and really captured that old school look. The figures used a standard blister pack, with each figure to the left of the card. The name of each character was directly below the figure with the classic Star Trek logo to the left of the card. Featured at the top left of each card was a nice illustration featuring the main characters, Kirk, Spock and McCoy in a colorful warp speed like strip, reminiscent of the logo for Star Trek the Motion Picture of 1979. The backing on each figure featured the other figures of that particular wave and each figure in that wave had the same card back. It should be noted the packaging changed for the 2009 and 2010 waves, to a simple blue themed card and the Starship Enterprise at the top of each card.
