The New Adventures of He-Man toy line began in 1989 as a futuristic reboot of the classic Masters of the Universe franchise. Seeking to refresh the brand and appeal to a new generation, Mattel reimagined He-Man in a sci-fi setting, moving the action from Eternia to the planet Primus. The first wave of figures moved away from the previous blocky designs and moved towards more articulation. He-Man now donned space armor and faced off against a cyber-enhanced Skeletor. This initial wave included several key characters, blending Galactic Guardian and Evil Mutant factions in a battle of good vs. evil in a high-tech future. Mattel gave us six initial core characters in 1989, along with a large scale playset with Starship Eternia, an Electronic Power Sword for roleplaying and four new vehicles.
After a successful launch of The New Adventures of He-Man toy line in 1989, the animated series debuted in September of 1990. The series was a futuristic reboot of the classic Masters of the Universe franchise that was rebranded to appeal to a new generation. This second wave included several more key characters in the battle of good vs. evil. There were nine more figures in 1990, which included brand new versions of both main characters, He-Man and Skeletor. In addition to the figures, we also got another large scale playset with Nordor, which now gave the bad guys a place to call home.
After the The New Adventures of He-Man toy line debuted in 1989 and the accompanying animated series in September of 1990, all seemed well….until it wasn’t. The rebooted animated series set out to appeal to a new generation, but just didn’t hit the mark. As a result, the series was cancelled in December of 1990, after just one season and 65 episodes. However, the New He-Man toy line continued in 1991 due to better than average sales. There were six more standard figures, one deluxe figure, a new Electronic Skeletor Skull Staff and three new vehicles.
By the end of 1991, The New Adventures of He-Man franchise was officially in trouble. The new toy line began strong in 1989, but saw waning sales for each wave thereafter. The rebooted animated series lasted only one season and 65 episodes, coming to a sudden end in December of 1990. Due to decreased sales, a lack of media outlets and increased competition from other toy lines, Mattel ended their new He-Man toy line in 1992. The final wave saw only three figures released in the North American market and three more being exclusives to European markets. This final wave did not include any vehicles or playsets.
