Masters of the Universe Wave 3 – 1984
The third wave of Masters of the Universe, released in 1984, introduced 12 brand-new action figures to the line. In addition to these fresh characters, Mattel reissued the original versions of He-Man and Skeletor, bringing the total number of figures in the wave to 14. Beyond the figures, the wave expanded the toy line’s universe with three new vehicles and a robotic battle horse named Stridor. To give the villains a stronghold of their own, Mattel launched Snake Mountain, a menacing headquarters designed for Skeletor and his crew of evil forces. Rounding out the wave was a new weapons accessory pack, offering extra gear to further customize the action.

Accessories like weapons racks, a weapons accessory pack, and themed furniture enhance the immersive play experience, making Snake Mountain the ultimate base for the forces of evil in Eternia. The neatest thing about Snake Mountain was the snake head microphone that you could talk into and it would disguise your voice as “frightening and evil”.

By the year 1984, The Masters of the Universe line was really cranking on all cylinders. It had a hugely successful animated series and the merchandising side of the line was growing by the minute. He-Man and Skeletor, along with the rest of the gang could be found on everything from lunchboxes and school supplies to clothing and Halloween costumes. The toy line was reaping the most benefits, and was even challenging Star Wars and GI Joe as one of the top selling toy lines of the year. The animated Filmation series was also hitting its stride, with the show keeping kids and adults alike invested in the stories of their favorite characters from the line. The Masters of the Universe franchise was truly thriving in an unprecedented wave of popularity for He-Man, Skeletor and friends.
The third wave of the MOTU line, gave us a new high of 12 brand new figures in 1984, along with re-issued “original” versions of He-Man and Skeletor for a total of 14 figures. The Heroic Warriors got six additions with Buzz-Off, Fisto, Mekaneck, Orko, Prince Adam and a new Battle Armor version of He-Man. Not to be outdone, the Evil Warriors also got six new figures with Clawful, Jitsu, Kobra Khan, Webstor, Whiplash and a new Battle Armor version of Skeletor. In addition to some great new figures, we also got 3 more vehicles, with the Dragon Walker, Road Ripper and Roton to go along with a new robotic battle horse, Stridor. Mattel also finally released a base for the bad guys to hang out in with Snake Mountain. This was a perfect compliment to Castle Grayskull with a ton of playability.
Once again, the packaging for the newest wave of the Masters of the Universe line remained virtually identical to the previous waves of the years before. The packaging for the Masters of the Universe line focused on bright eye catching colors that grabbed your attention and launched your imagination. The Masters of the Universe logo sat at the top of the blister pack card, just above a red rock starburst explosion that seemed to jump out at you. The name of the character was positioned just above the bubble in big letters. As far as the card backs go, all wave three figures included additional wave three figures on the back and a beautifully illustrated action scene at the top of the card featuring the appropriate character.
