Lord of the Rings – Fellowship of the Ring
(Toy Biz) 2001 – 2005

The Fellowship of the Ring was released in 2001, as the first of Peter Jackson’s epic Lord of the Rings trilogy. Expectations were high for the first ever live-action LOTR movie, and that went for the toy line as well. The movie went on to become a smash hit, for the fans AND critics. The toy line was released by Toy Biz, who was actually owned by Marvel at the time. This line proved to be a solid effort, consisting of several waves of new and re-released figures, along with large sized figures, multipacks, gift packs and various accessories.

Fellowship of the Ring (2001): Half Moon Packaging – Series 1

Toy Biz released five new figures for the premier wave of “Half-Moon” Packaged figures from The Fellowship of the Ring line in 2001. Featured were Frodo, Legolas, Newborn Lurtz, Strider and Witch King Ringwraith.

Fellowship of the Ring (2001): Half Moon Packaging – Series 2

Toy Biz released five more figures for the 2nd wave of “Half-Moon” Packaged figures from The Fellowship of the Ring line in 2001. Featured were Gandalf, Gimli, Orc Overseer, Samwise Gamgee and Saruman.

Fellowship of the Ring (2001): Half Moon Packaging – Series 3

Toy Biz released only four figures for the 3rd and final wave of “Half-Moon” Packaged figures from The Fellowship of the Ring line in 2001. This small wave included Aragorn w/ Arrow Launch Action, Elrond in Armor, Orc Warrior and Travelling Bilbo.

Fellowship of the Ring (2003-2005): Small Card Packaging – Series 1

In 2004, Toy Biz re-released seven figures on the new small card packaging. Two of the figures were re-released from previous waves (Frodo, Strider) while five others (Boromir, Galadriel, Prologue Elven Warrior, Twilight Frodo, Twilight Ringwraith) were brand new figures to the line.

Toy Biz continued the new small card packaged figures from The Fellowship of the Ring line with a new 2nd wave of seven additional figures. Like the previous wave, some were re-releases (Elrond in Armor, Gandalf the Grey, Travelling Bilbo, Witch King Ringwraith) while three more (Arwen, Gimli w/ Axe-Throwing Action, Legolas w/ Dagger & Arrow Launching Action) were new additions to the line.

Fellowship of the Ring (2003-2005): Small Card Packaging – Series 3

Toy Biz continued the new small card packaged figures from The Fellowship of the Ring line with a new 3rd wave consisting of six figures. Unlike the previous waves, these figures were brand new and had never been seen before. Featured were Birthday Celebration Bilbo, Elrond of Rivendell, Gil-Galad, King Elendil, Lurtz and Moria Orc Archer.

Fellowship of the Ring (2003-2005): Small Card Packaging – Series 4

Toy Biz continued the new small card packaged figures from The Fellowship of the Ring line with a new 4th wave consisting of seven figures. Like the previous wave, these figures were brand new and had never been seen before. Featured were Bilbo Transfixed, Gandalf the Grey w/ Staff, Mirkwood Legolas, Prince Isildur, Super Poseable Boromir, Super Poseable Strider and my personal favorite, Peter Jackson as a Hobbit.

Fellowship of the Ring (2003-2005): Small Card Packaging – Series 5

The 5th and final wave of the new small card packaged figures from The Fellowship of the Ring line consisted of five brand new figures, that included Boromir w/ Electronic Sound, Council Legolas, Flaming Ringwraith, Galadriel Entranced and Weathertop Strider.

Fellowship of the Ring (2001-2002): Mail Order Exclusive Figures

Burger King offered two different Promotional figures that were only available through mail-order with one of their in-restaurant order forms. The two figures were Uruk-Hai and Lurtz, which were made available from 2001-2002. Note: there are actually two variations of the white mailer box for the Uruk-Hai figure and it was limited to 5000 pieces.

Toy Biz released four brand new Two-Packs for The Fellowship of the Ring line in 2001. Included were Boromir and Lurtz; Frodo and Samwise with a Boat; Merry & Pippin and Orc; as well as Uruk-Hai and Gimli.

Fellowship of the Ring (2001): Three-Packs

Toy Biz released three brand new Three-Packs for their Fellowship of the Ring line in 2001, but they were UK exclusives, mostly to Woolworth retail stores.

Fellowship of the Ring (2001): Deluxe Horse & Rider Sets

Toy Biz released two different Deluxe House and Rider Sets for The Fellowship of the Ring line in 2001. The two sets were Arwen with Asfaloth, and Ringwraith with Horse. A second version of the Ringwraith with Horse was released in Canada, that featured Frodo as part of the set. This Canadian version can be tough to find on the secondary market nowadays.

Fellowship of the Ring (2001-2005): Gift Packs

Toy Biz releases several beautiful Gift Packs throughout their run of Lord of the Rings action figures, and that tradition began with The Fellowship of the Ring in 2001. Two different Gift Packs were released with the Deluxe Gift Pack featuring the whole gang and a Bearers of the One Ring featuring Twilight versions of Bilbo, Gollum and Frodo. Two other sets were released in 2005 for The Fellowship of the Ring series, Lothlorien Gift Pack and The Defeat of Sauron Set.

Fellowship of the Ring (2001): Large Sized Figures

Toy Biz released a “Large Sized” figure of the Cave Troll in 2001. This figure came with electronic sound and action features. The Cave Troll was a fantastic sculpt and a fantastic effort by Toy Biz.

Fellowship of the Ring (2001): 12 Inch Figures

The 12 Inch figure series was launched by Toy Biz in 2001 for their Fellowship of the Ring line. This series would continue with the following two movies. There were six figure in all for the first wave, with Aragorn, Arwen, Frodo, Galadriel, Gandalf and Gimli. There were actually two different versions of Arwen, with the more commonly found one pictured below. The other version featured her in a purple gown.

Toy Biz released the Electronic Light ‘N’ Sound Sting Sword and Uruk-Hai Crossbow Set for The Fellowship of the Ring line. They would both be re-released for the following two movies in the epic Lord of the Ring trilogy.

The first few waves of figures released for The Fellowship of the Ring included most of the major characters from the movie, with many new and several different versions of main characters being released in later waves on the smaller card blister packs. Among the highlights from the Fellowship of the Ring line included Bilbo (Birthday Celebration & Transfixed), Prologue Elven Warrior, Galadriel (Regular & Transfixed), Boromir, Prince Isildur, King Elendil, Gil-Galad, Elrond and even Peter Jackson as a Hobbit. Toy Biz also released a series of Horses with Figures, 12″ Figures, Large Sized Cave Troll, Multipacks and various Gift Packs. This line sold very well, and set the bar high for the following LOTR movies . Most of these toys can now be found in abundance at just about every comic, toy or hobby shop at reasonable prices. Overall, this is a fairly inexpensive line to collect and easily found, but definitely takes up quite a bit of space.

The packaging for the Fellowship of the Ring line was done in a green color theme, offset by yellowish gold highlights. Toy Biz released the first three waves on a lovely eye-catching “Half-Moon” package before switching a “Small Card” blister pack for the final five waves. Personally, I loved the look of the Half-Moon packaging, but they could be difficult to display or store due to the odd shape. The smaller carded packaging are certainly much easier to store and display, but definitely lacked the flair of the larger Half-Moon package. All other items from this line came in the same Green colored packaging. The early release gift packs came in the regular Fellowship of the Ring Green, but later releases had different color schemes, depending on which gift pack it was.
