Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings Trilogy was nothing short of EPIC! Each of the movies are considered modern day classics and they spawned a massive generations of fans, which in turn, created a huge generation of Lord of the Rings collectors. Toy Biz’s LOTR toy line from 2001 – 2005 was warmly received by both fans and collectors, and remains popular to this day. This line was a solid effort, consisting of several waves of well articulated action figures, large sized figures, multipacks, gift packs and various accessories. This final wave of products was aptly named “The Epic Trilogy Series” and consisted of only three waves and a couple of Gift Sets.
Toy Biz released only three waves of action figures for The Epic Trilogy Series, and only two Gift Sets. There were no new 12″ figures, Large Sized Figures, Horse Sets, Multipacks or other Accessories released for the line. The three new waves included many major characters from the movie, with a few brand new figures along with some that were previously released. Among the highlights were Council of Elrond Aragorn and Super Poseable Frodo from the Fellowship of the Ring wave; Gandalf Stormcrow and Eowyn Shield Maiden of Rohan from the Two Towers wave; and Gondorian Swordsman and Mordor Orc Lieutenant from the Return of the King wave. Toy Biz also released two nice looking Gift Packs, with Kings of Middle Earth and Elves of Middle Earth.
The packaging for the Epic Trilogy Series combined color schemes of all three waves of Lord of the Rings figures from 2001-2005, but with a new unique photo art adorning each package. Each of the three waves of figures had their own unique packaging theme, offset by the traditional yellowish gold highlights. All packaging utilized the “small card” blister pack style that Toy Biz switched to in late 2003. These small card packaged Epic Trilogy Series figures are certainly a bit tougher to find than previous waves and generally sell for more money on the secondary market, with some being harder to find than others. This was mostly due to lower production numbers and big box stores just not willing to give up retail space to a franchise that had no new movies on the horizon.
