Legends of Batman (Kenner) 1994-1997

Legends of Batman was a Kenner-produced toy line that launched in 1994 and ran through 1997, following the success of Batman: The Animated Series. Unlike media-driven lines, Legend of Batman was a concept-based assortment that focused on imaginative variations of Batman, Robin, and classic villains rather than direct ties to a TV show or film. The line emphasized bold costumes and designs, armor, themed period environments, and action-oriented gimmicks that reflected Kenner’s mid-1990s design approach. While it featured fewer unique characters than earlier Batman lines, Legend of Batman stood out for its creativity and variety, offering collectors and kids an ever-changing take on the Dark Knight during its multi-year run.

The Legend of Batman line included three waves consisting of 20 standard released action figures with 13 of them being different variants of Batman, along with 2 variants each of Robin and Joker. Wave One included: Catwoman, Crusader Batman, Cyborg Batman, Future Batman, The Joker, Knightquest Batman, Nightwing, and Power Guardian Batman. Wave Two included: Crusader Robin, Dark Warrior Batman, Knightsend Batman, Long Bow Batman, The Riddler, Samurai Batman, Ultra Armor Batman, and Viking Batman. Wave Three included: Buccaneer Batman, First Mate Robin, Gladiator Batman, and Laughing Man Joker. In addition, there were four Deluxe Batman variants, two multipacks, a 15″ Knightquest Batman figure, a 12″ two-pack of Batman and Catwoman, and 4 vehicles that included the Batcycle, Batmobile, Dark Rider Batman, and Sky Bat. And if that wasn’t enough, Kenner also re-released 18 of their 20 standard figures as Warner’s Brothers Store Exclusives with new paint jobs.

The packaging for Kenner’s Legends of Batman toy line was a bit plain and boring, which was a shame because the toy line was so much fun. Each figure came on a traditional blister card, with the figure positioned on the right side of the bubble and its accessories on the left. The Legends of Batman logo was to the top left of the card, accompanied by the same illustration of Batman. The top right of each blister card featured an exclusive Sky Box trading card, matching the included character. The character’s name appeared above the trading card on the right side. The back of each card showcased all the figures and accessories from that wave, along with photos highlighting each figure’s action features. Overall, Kenner’s Legends of Batman line was a fun and creative effort. It did not have the wider character selection of other Batman lines, but nobody can dispute the creativity that Kenner put into to this line.
