Doctor Who 1978-1979

Doctor Who is a beloved and iconic BBC television series that first aired back in 1963. The show tells the story of an alien being called a “Time Lord”, who travels through the universe and helps those in need. By the mid to late 70’s, Doctor Who was experiencing massive success with the 4th Doctor, portrayed by Tom Baker. Mego partnered with Denys Fisher to create this line in 1977. The Doctor Who toy line included six different 9.5″ figures and the Tardis accessory. It should be noted these figures were only made available in the U.K and Italy.

For more information about Mego’s Doctor Who line, see bottom of the page for a complete summary.

Doctor Who (1978-1979): Basic Action Figures

Cyberman

Market Value:
Boxed $400 – $550
Loose $125 – $175

Cyberman
Accessories: None
Years Released: 1978
Difficulty To Find: Hard to Find – Occasionally listed, and usually sells quickly
Notes: The Cybermen are a race of cyborgs that have been menacing Doctor Who since the show’s first incarnation. This version of the Cyberman was more or less based on the ones portrayed in the episodes “Invasion” and “Revenge of the Cybermen”. The detail on this guy is amazing from the sewn-on hoses to his crazy cool chest plate. The costume itself had a nice looking silver finish as well.

Dalek

Market Value:
Boxed $900 – $1,200
Loose $150 – $250

Dalek
Accessories: None
Years Released: 1978
Difficulty To Find: Hard to Find – Occasionally listed, and usually sells quickly
Notes: The Daleks are the arch-nemesis to Doctor Who and stands out as among the more memorable characters from the show who are not named Doctor Who. The Daleks are essentially small tanks that are controlled by evil mutants. They have a limited vocabulary but are known by their iconic catchphrase, “EXTERMINATE”. This was a pretty amazing looking interpretation of the Daleks and shows some quality crafting by Denys Fisher.

Doctor Who

Market Value:
Boxed $250 – $350
Loose $75 – $125

Doctor Who
Accessories: Coat, Vest, Pants, Shoes, Hat, Scarf, Sonic Screwdriver
Years Released: 1978
Difficulty To Find: Moderate Difficulty – Takes patience and appears less often
Notes: Doctor Who is the “Intrepid Explorer of the Galaxies” who just happens to be an alien time lord to travels through the galaxy to help those in need. There have been several incarnations of the Doctor, but Mego/Denys Fisher modeled theirs after Tom Baker who played the 4th Doctor from 1974-1981. Doctor Who comes with his remarkably accurate costume, which includes his coat, vest, pants, shoes, hat, scarf and of course, sonic screwdriver. The rumor on this figure is that his head sculpt was damaged in a fire, so it was replace by the one of Gambit of the New Avengers TV series that scrapped as a toy line before it began. This may or may not be true, but either way, I still enjoy the fun looking head sculpt. On a personal level, this is one of my all time favorite Mego’s from back in the day.

Giant Robot

Market Value:
Boxed $350 – $450
Loose $100 – $150

Giant Robot
Accessories: Silver Shoulder Pieces x 2
Years Released: 1978
Difficulty To Find: Hard to Find – Occasionally listed, and usually sells quickly
Notes: The Giant Robot figure was based on the character featured in the episode “Robot” from 1974. The K-1 Robot was only seen in that one episode prior to being produced as a toy, but it left a great impression. The Robot figure came with his silver shoulder pieces detached, which is why many loose versions are missing them. This really is a super cool looking figure by Mego/Denys Fisher, and kudos to them for being able to bring it to life.

K-9

Market Value:
Boxed $350 – $450
Loose $90 – $130

K-9
Accessories: None
Years Released: 1979
Difficulty To Find: Hard to Find – Occasionally listed, and usually sells quickly
Notes: K-9 is the robotic companion to Doctor Who, that became an almost immediate fan favorite. Many loose figures are usually found with the ears and/or tail broken off. It should be noted that K-9 was actually released in Wave 2 of the Doctor Who line, being the only member of that wave. This was almost certainly due to the immense popularity of the robotic character.

Leela

Market Value:
Boxed $800 – $1,000
Loose $200 – $300

Leela
Accessories: Cloth Outfit, Dagger, Scabbard
Years Released: 1978
Difficulty To Find: Hard to Find – Occasionally listed, and usually sells quickly
Notes: Leela was portrayed by Louise Jamieson on the show and was a companion to the Doctor. She first appeared in the episode “The Face of Evil” in 1977, and would appear in over 40 more episodes. Leela comes with a rather scanty looking cloth outfit, matching the one from the show. Leela also comes with her knife and scabbard.

Doctor Who (1978-1979): Accessories

TARDIS

Market Value:
Boxed $500 – $700
Loose $150 – $250

Tardis
Accessories: Blue Tardis
Years Released: 1978
Difficulty To Find: Hard to Find – Occasionally listed, and usually sells quickly
Notes: For fans across the globe, the Tardis has been the symbol for Doctor Who for decades, and even non-fans instantly recognize the iconic blue police box as a Doctor Who mainstay. The TARDIS (“Time And Relative Dimension(s) In Space”) is a time machine spacecraft used by the Doctor. Despite its appearance, the interior is MUCH larger than what we see on the outside in the show. For their toy version, Mego/Denys Fisher borrowed from the Star Trek Enterprise technology. Similar to that playset’s transporter, the TARDIS can make a character “disappear” with the push of a button. The exterior of the TARDIS is made up of cardboard, so loose versions can look pretty rough if they have not been cared for properly.

The packaging for the Doctor Who action figures was pretty fantastic looking and definitely eye catching. Each figure was released in a closed box package with the figure on the left hand side and the flap to the left. The overall color scheme changed with each character, but the design remained the same. A nice illustration of each character was to the left with their name above them in big letters, along with the Doctor Who logo. The right flap of each package featured a brief description of the character with additional illustrations. All figure sets shared the same back design. The Doctor Who toy line sold well at the time, and even made enough profit to release a 2nd wave with K-9. These figures remain very popular to this day, and can be a bit challenging to track down on the secondary market.
