Black Series – 6 Inch 2013 – Present

Hasbro introduced their new 6 Inch action figure line called The Black Series in 2013. They also released a 3.75 Inch version of the Black Series line as well. The Black Series included characters from all Star Wars mediums, including the movies, animated series and Expanded Universe. This was the first time Star Wars was available in this new 6 Inch format, and it worked extremely well. The packaging has changed over the years, but the amazing attention to detail and life like sculpting has remained the same. This line remains incredibly successful, and a huge hit with collectors.

Black Series 6 Inch (2013): Black/Orange Packaging

The first wave of six inch Black Series figures was slated to contain 14 figures, but figures # 13, Chewbacca was pushed back to the following Blue Package wave in 2014.

Black Series 6 Inch (2014 – 2015): Black/Blue Packaging

The packaging on second wave changed up a bit, with the orange line from the first wave being replaced with a blue stripe, and the package bubble was re-designed to be a bit bigger.

Black Series 6 Inch (2015 – 2020): Red/Black Packaging

The third wave of the 6 Inch Black Series featured the figures in a red/black box with a small drawing of the character on the bottom right corner. The packaging was not overly creative or beautiful but was still appealing enough and Hasbro relied on the newly sized figures to be the main draw.

Black Series 6 Inch (2020 – Present): Galaxy (Mural) Wave

Hasbro once again changed the Black Series packaging to keep it fresh. This time, to a more vibrant theme, with a different color scheme for each series. This initial packaging design had an angular shape on the right side that contained a painted portrait of the character. That was later changed to a solid box , as part of Hasbro’s green initiative to use less plastic. When the figures from each series are put together, they form a beautiful character mural.

Black Series 6 Inch (2013 – Present): Vehicles & Creatures

Hasbro wanted to do something different in 2013, so they introduced a new 6 Inch action figure line called The Black Series. They also released a 3.75 Inch version of the Black Series line as well. The Black Series would include characters from all Star Wars mediums, including all movies, animated series and even the Expanded Universe from the books and comics. The character selection was a fantastic lineup that included many fan favorites and visually appealing figures, but the real beauty of this line was the sculpting. The 6 Inch format allowed Hasbro to really take their time and focus on character likeness, as well as great attention to detail when it came to clothing, uniforms and accessories. This was the first time that Star Wars was available in this 6 Inch format, and it worked extremely well.

The packaging on the Black Series 6 Inch line was fairly simple with black colored packaging and an orange stripe on the right side. The 2nd wave was very similar except the orange line was replaced with a blue stripe, and the package bubble was re-designed to be a bit bigger. The next wave packaged the figures in a red/black box that included a small drawing of the character on the bottom right. The packaging was not overly creative or beautiful but was still appealing enough and Hasbro relied on the newly sized figures to be the main draw, so the package didn’t really need any flashy art to distract from that. The newest Black Series figures are called the “Galaxy Wave” with all new packaging, which happens to be absolutely gorgeous with bright fun colors and beautiful artwork of the characters.

The 6 Inch Black Series line has now lasted over eight years, with an ever expanding lineup of beautifully sculpted characters with amazing detail. This line still remains incredibly successful, and has proven to be a huge hit with collectors. The series has evolved through the years, but it remains among Hasbro’s best selling action figure lines. The Black Series is among my personal favorites for many reasons and still has a lot of life left in it. The Black Series Star Wars figures have truly stood the test of time, and hopefully with a little luck, will continue to bring joy and excitement to Star Wars fans across the globe.
