Batman Returns (Kenner) 1992

Batman Returns (Kenner) 1992

Kenner wasted no time producing Batman toys after re-securing the Batman license in 1990, launching The Dark Knight Collection, which was loosely based on the 1989 Batman movie. Following the line’s success, Kenner expanded the franchise in 1992 with a new series inspired by its sequel, Batman Returns. This collection featured eighteen new figures, along with deluxe editions, accessories, vehicles, and an impressive Batcave Command Center playset. The Batman Returns toy line sold well and ultimately provided Kenner with the successful franchise they had been seeking.

For more information about Kenner’s Batman Returns line, see bottom of page for a complete summary.

Bruce then changes into the Dark Knight by putting on the included cape, chest plate, belt, gloves and boots to answer the call and fight crime.

Catwoman

Loose $9 – $13

Catwoman
Accessories: Taser Gun w/ Projectile, Whip
Years Released: 1992

Notes: Catwoman (portrayed by Michelle Pfeiffer) was one of the big baddies from Batman Returns, and, unlike Penguin, got a nicely done movie accurate action figure. The taser projectile fires by pressing a button.

Penguin
Accessories: Blast-Off Umbrella Launcher w/ Spinning Umbrella
Years Released: 1992
Difficulty To Find: Common – Easily found on the secondary market
Notes: Penguin and Catwoman were the baddies from Batman Returns, so it just makes sense that we’d get an action figure of each. The Catwoman figure looked great but Kenner thought Danny DeVito’s Penguin character from the movie was too scary for kids to make into an action figure, so they released a more traditional Penguin figure. He comes with a Blast-Off Umbrella Launcher w/ Spinning Umbrella.

The Batman Returns line included 18 standard action figures with 13 of them being different variants of Batman. Kenner released their figures over two different waves, with Wave one including: Aero Strike Batman, Air Attack Batman, Artic Batman, Bruce Wayne Batman, Catwoman, Crime Attack Batman, Deep Dive Batman, Laser Batman, Penguin, Penguin Commandos, Powerwing Batman, Shadow Wing Batman, Sky Winch Batman, Thunderwhip Batman, and strangely enough Robin, who was not even in the movie. The second wave only included three Batman variants (Hydro Charge Batman, Jungle Tracker Batman, Night Climber Batman). In addition, there were five Deluxe Batman variants, a couple roleplay accessories, a 14″ Batman figure, an impressive Batcave Command Center playset, and 11 vehicles (Batskiboat, Batmissile Batmobile, Batmobile, Bruce Wayne Custom Coupe, Laser Blade, Umbrella Jet, Robin’s Jet Foil, Sky Blade, Sky Drop, Turbo Jet Batwing and Camo Attack Batmobile).

The packaging for Kenner’s Batman Returns toy line closely followed the design of The Dark Knight Collection, featuring vibrant graphics and appealing colors. Each figure came on a traditional blister card, with the figure positioned on the right side of the bubble and its accessories on the left. The Batman Returns logo was centered at the top of the card, accompanied by a well-drawn illustration of the character to the right. The character’s name appeared above the bubble on the left side. The back of each card showcased all the figures and accessories from that wave, along with photos highlighting each figure’s action features. Overall, Kenner’s Batman Returns line was a strong effort, offering a slightly improved character selection over The Dark Knight Collection, though still somewhat limited.
