This was a strange choice by Mego since they literally had dozens of famous and well-known pirates to chose from. Captain Patch comes with a pistol and rifle, but no sword. He also comes with a purple sash and cloth costume.

By 1974, Mego toys had a huge hit on their hands with their World’s Greatest Super Heroes line, and were going through a big expansion period. The Action Jackson line was winding down, so Mego needed to introduce some other non-super hero action figure lines to give them a little diversity. Their success on the WGSH line gave Mego some real clout in the toy industry and were boasting huge toy sale numbers, so they could take a few gambles with some different types of action figure lines, and boy did they ever. One of those gambles happened to be the World’s Greatest Super Pirates action figure line. This was part of a few different historical action figure lines that Mego released in the mid 1970’s. The idea was to release an action figure line based on Pirates, which in theory sounds very cool. The line did see some limited success, but just not enough to keep it going for additional waves.
The World’s Greatest Super Pirates toy line featured four basic characters, which are a complete mixed bag of actual historic pirates and some fictional ones as well. featured from actual pirates were the legendary Blackbeard and Jean Lafitte. From the fictional side, we got Long John Silver from the iconic book, Treasure Island and Captain Patch. Captain Patch actually doesn’t appear to be from anything in particular and seems more of a general pirate character. This is a strange choice by Mego because there was certainly no shortage of crazy cool pirate characters to create. There was talk of a ship vehicle or playset for these figures, but it never actually materialized, which is a shame. There were no other accessories created for the Super Pirates line.
The packaging for the World’s Greatest Super Pirates line of action figures certainly fit the theme of the line with the ship in the background and the Super Pirates logo in an old cutlass sword. It was the standard boxed Mego figure design that began being introduced in 1973, with the open window so you can check out the figure inside. The figure itself sat just off to the left, while an old pirate ship drawing adorned the right side. Each character’s name sat above the box window and the Super Pirates logo sat on the bottom of each box. The Super Pirates packaging was fairly simple but was still attractive.
