Robin Hood and His Merry Men – 1975
Mego’s Robin Hood and his Merry Men line featured four characters from the classic Robin Hood story from medieval times. Included were Little John, Will Scarlet, Friar Tuck, and the legendary Robin Hood. No other figures, horses or playsets were planned by Mego for this series. The line was not very successful for Mego, which would explain why no further plans were made.

By 1975, Mego toys had gained quite the reputation as one of the top action figure producers in the world. With such iconic and successful lines such as Star Trek, Planet of the Apes and World’s Greatest Super Heroes. Mego was exploding into a huge expansion period. Despite their success with their big brands, Mego was still introducing several different smaller lines to add some diversity to their brand. Since Mego now had some real clout in the toy industry and were boasting huge toy sale numbers, they could afford to take a few gambles with some different types of action figure lines, and boy did they ever. One of those gambles happened to be the Robin Hood and his Merry Men action figure line. This was part of a few different historical action figure lines that Mego released in the mid 1970’s. The idea was to release an action figure line based on the classic Robin Hood characters, and who doesn’t love the original Prince of Thieves, Robin Hood. The line was not very successful for Mego, which would explain why no further plans were made for the line.
The Robin Hood and his Merry Men toy line featured four basic characters from the literary classic Robin Hood story from medieval times. Included were Little John with his famous Bo Staff, Will Scarlet with his sword and knife, Friar Tuck and of course, the legendary Robin Hood with bow and quiver. The Robin Hood and Little John figures appear to modeled after the classic 1938 Robin Hood movie of the Robin Hood story. No other figures, horses or playsets were planned by Mego for this line, which is truly a shame because there were so many possibilities here. There were no other accessories created for the Robin Hood line.
The packaging for the Robin Hood and his Merry Men line of action figures certainly fit the theme of the line with a wooded Sherwood Forest background and the classic looking Robin Hood and Merry Men logo. It was the standard boxed Mego figure design that began being introduced in 1973, with the open window so you can check out the figure inside. The figure itself sat just off to the left, while a wooded drawing scene adorning the right side. Each character’s name sat above the box window in old English letters and the Robin Hood logo sat on the bottom of each box. The backdrop of each box front, behind the figure, featured a colorful woodland background scene. The Robin Hood and Merry men packaging was beautifully done and very colorful, which really grabbed your attention on a store shelf or display.
